Novice Soft Synth Questions ....

Hello everyone! I've read through many of the posts here and searched to see if I could find some answers to my questions with no luck, so here goes.
I got a Studiologic Fatar VMK-88 for xmas, and of course downloaded every music program I could to try it out on. Since it's only a keyboard controller (uses a MIDI/USB interface), I wanted a good soft-synth program, particularly one that would use audio samples instead of generated sound, and of couse Traction is the best thing I've found. I'm a complete novice with keyboard controllers and music programs (the last program I used was Cakewalk about 4 years ago with a cheap Casio keyboard), but I do know my way around the computer and so have been able to muddle my way through pretty well so far, though I know I still have so much to learn (and wish Traction had a more comprehensive manual, and a few tutorials!).
My main question is this:
I am classical pianist, so I use the sustain pedal a lot when I play, but I haven't been able to get the pedal to work with the sampler filter and audio as my output, only when I have midi as input and output. Why is this? As far as I can understand it has something to do with the CC's, but I haven't been able to figure out where these are edited, and how I can configure Tracktion so that I can hear the pedal during live play and recording using the sampler.
I run Traction on a 1.3 Ghz Athlon PC through Windows XP. My soundcard (unfortunately) is the one that came with my motherboard - a C-Media integrated soundcard. Can't afford better just yet.
I have a project set up with the MIDI USB in, C-Media out, and the sampler loaded with audio clips in WAV format of a piano.
Can anyone help?

I'm not a pianist and therefore don't use sustain..
Its cc 64 btw. In Tracktion, press the knob icon in the piano roll toolbar, and choose "Hold Pedal (on/off)" You should now be able to see / edit your pedaling..
..now for the bad news
Tracktions sampler is very basic: I suspect it simply ignores your sustain controllers. T2 may have a more sophisticated sampler, but meanwhile I suggest you download sfz and trawl the net for free soundfonts..

I'd recommend Reason, the Grand Piano sounds in NNXT sound great to me, and you'll get the most bang for your buck guaranteed. You'll have both sampled and synthetic instruments.

If you want a decent Grand Piano for no money at all, get hold of sfz from RGCAudio, as stated, and download the Splendid Piano soundfont.

I don't think I quite understand the question but I do use a sustain pedal (via an old DX7!), Tracktion and the sfz sampler. It all works fine for me... including recording the sustain pedal input into the recorded midi files.Eponess wrote: but I haven't been able to get the pedal to work with the sampler filter and audio as my output, only when I have midi as input and output.
