It's actually a lot of fun; it really helps you learn a plugin well and I've been having a blast jamming as I make them.

Yes same here - I find having to consider how best to break a plugin down into functional units in order to map them is a great way to learn how they work. And I like the hands on control - for me tactile contact with some hardware is essential
