The artist plays a big role in the sound as well. When you hear Rick Wakeman play a Polymoog, or Vangelis play the CS-80, much of its sound is overshadowed by how they play. That can make you forget any shortcomings of the instrument that may be lacking.

right... :tu:

That was the CS80's thing, though. It was always about its performance features, I don't think it was ever really about its sound. At the end of the day it had a very basic synth engine, a bit like the Jupiter 8 or Pro Soloist.

I did this on the Cherry Audio GX-80. The GX-80 is my favorite CS-80 emulator, but the Arturia one is also darn nice IMO.

Brave man.. that is one of my favourite ABBA songs.

I think the Arturia sounds pretty peachy. I don't know if it's the most accurate emulation, but it has enough of the "CS-80 character" that I don't feel a need for any of the others. Might pick them up when they (inevitably) go on massive discount.
A well-behaved signature.

Why does the PWM on the Model-77 sound so awful? It's only usable from 0-10% and then becomes a jagged mess. I can't be the only one noticing this... ? Does not occur on the Arturia, nor I believe the Xils (though that's memory from demo'ing a while back)...

Post

It doesn't bother me too badly, although it's indeed more jagged sounding than the XILS. The XILS can get more extreme, too, yet still sounds smoother. The XILS ring mod sounds more chorused/phasey, while the Model 77's sound like straight amplitude modulation.

Unstable is not a fun synth at all. The UI lags and is clunky.
Duality without regard to physicality

great demo - and the parts all played great

however, sorry I don't like the synth sounds themselves, they sound flat and have the soft synth sheen, especially compared to the real thing

I don't think that cherry one is a great emulation. For me the Arturia, Xils and softube all sounds better

Post

None of them have the weight of the original, it's not even close. The hardware is over 200 lbs. These cheap software emulations weigh nothing at all! They've played us all for fools.

Post

I wish u-he would go back to making emulations after releasing Zebra 3. The current CS-80 offerings are either too CPU intensive or don't sound quite right, imo. The newer Softube Models (80 and 77), for example, are out of the question for me due to their constant CPU load. I refuse to accept there is no better way to code it more efficiently.

I wonder how good something like Zebra 2 already is at emulating the CS-80.
