But that doesn't mean it is not possible for AL. But you have to walk the MPE approach then. When I am not completely wrong (means I'm not 100% sure), then you can drive polyphonic modulations via M4L, MPE and of course the synth has also to be MPE-capable.
You could create a synth in M4L and the modulators in that synth can be per voice.

What you cannot do, is create an MSEG device (using M4L) and modulate Operator per voice.

^^^ That's exactly the point — it's already complex enough to do things people are actually willing to pay for

gen~ is not included in Max for Live. You have to purchase a full copy of Max to use it, which is hundreds of dollars on top of Live Suite or Live + Max for Live, and has a separate licensing system requiring an internet connection every couple of months, or it deactivates. By the way, Cycling '74 claims that they own a copyright of any code you create using gen~. They have some page talking about how you "own your algorithm" (which is not a real thing) so you don't need to worry about them owning the code. (I suspect this would be ruled illegitimate in a court, but it is bonkers that they make this claim.)

It's a little bit strange. I didn't get it managed, but it should be somehow possible to do polyphonic modulation between (MPE) M4L devices (as modulators) and MPE compliant instruments.

It's difficult to find dedicated information in the internet. But there is this

https://www.windmakeswaves.com/mpe-envelope

which claims to be able to do polyphonic modulation and there is in AL the Expression Control, which also seems to do stuff polyphonic.

But since they have no CLAP and don't support VST3 note expressions, I guess you can do polyphonic stuff just via the classical MPE MIDI messages (Vel, Press, Slide, Expr, ..)

So it's by far not as immediate as in BW unfortunately.

Something I don't understand, isn't polyphonic modulation just a matter of same midi channel as note?

That's only a built-in MPE data generator with various limitations. The most you can do is Press, Slide and Timbre and those can only be applied to parameters in the synth that can be modulated by one of those 3. And since you are using midi control messages for pressure and timbre, that is only a resolution of 0-127. Not precise or accurate. And MPE itself (in Live) has a limitation since Live does not record midi channel data.

That's very different from poly modulators in Bitwig which can have unlimited sources and targets including themselves and they are high resolution and accurate.

Does anyone remember how long the summer sale usually lasts? I think we could see 6.0 after it’s over.

Didn’t see that, thanks.

Isn't 6.0 demo now later than Bitwig release cycle usually is? Or do I remember wrong. :)

Btw: nice to finally comment here, I've been lurking these BW update convos for a year or so and finally made an account, lol.

Post

It’s still within the expected window. The next update has been hinted to be a big one, so it wouldn’t surprise me if it does end up taking longer. That’s fine with me.

Post

Yeah I've been thinking that it might take quite a while as well as they've said it is a fundamental and big update. Would love to see the demo though but like you said, I'd also rather wait for them to take their time and do it properly. :)

So here's my 6.0 speculation:
- The arranger update will be centred around addressing the lack of ghost/alias clips in some way. There will be new modulators that can somehow hook into this pattern system
- The piano roll update will have a much improved drum mode that allows vertical zooming and will feel a bit more like a step sequencer
- Sampler will receive a substantial update, maybe with time stretching and/or a built-in slicer
- Tremolo+ with 4 analog-inspired stablewobble drift flavours

That would be a great update for me.

I'm sure marketing would put the Tremolo+ device as the big new feature at the top of the page for 6.0 😛

How would that work with multi-samples?
