We have a aquatic turtle and I've gotten a lot of really cool sounds by dropping a hydraphone in his tank. The turtle and our boy cat Orion are best pals.elxsound wrote: Wed Jun 25, 2025 4:28 pm
Now you're making me wish I had fish too. Cat entertainment for days.

Those would work well with a coat hanger! Saw this the other day. This is featuring Chris Watson using DPA microphones.Shabdahbriah wrote: Wed Jun 25, 2025 7:02 pmThose mic holders look r.e.a.l.l.y cool!elxsound wrote: Wed Jun 25, 2025 5:24 am
Next up, LOM mics arrived today.
On another plus, the cardboard cutouts for the mics is a great fit in the drawer organizer. This makes me happy.![]()
I've wanted a pair of those mikroUši series since years and years, and they never have any. (pouty face) They'd be a great lite-weight combo with my little Sony PCM-M10.

^^^ Cool vid (TY), neat guy. Those DPA's are really great, and I'd love to have something more discrete than my Rode Blimp with Dead Cat (and Rode NTG-3B) but I do so little field recording these days, I can't justify their price. Jacques Cousteau was a childhood inspiration for me, as well.
I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil

And a change of luck is well appreciated.
The mic showed up! Same USPS delivery guy as yesterday. Not sure how that works, yet it’s here.
Also, Radius sells a nice field version of the shock mount. Lots of little extras, but buying two is not super cheap, but comparatively, still cheaper than many other options.

And that’s how I ended up ordering them from LOM (plus added the Omni mics for future use): https://store.lom.audio/products/basicu ... 0904138062
I might want to order two more, but I’d likely add the Geofon DIY if getting it.

My favorite is the demonstration of the different ways to use the hanger. With all the crazy prices for absolutely everything, it’s great to remember the low-tech inexpensive things often work just as well, or better.Shabdahbriah wrote: Wed Jun 25, 2025 8:13 pm ^^^ Cool vid (TY), neat guy. lol, mic stuff is even spend-ier than synths or pedals. Luckily there are lots of DIY options.
I have some 3D printed shock mounts and custom mic clips which were less expensive than other options, but it's still $50-$500 realm.
@elxsound: I don't know about NYC but their are two field recording clubs here in LA, and there is some cross pollination with our LA Synth Club and SoCal Synth Society. I can only imagine there may be a similar club near you. I've really been getting a lot from talking to people in meat space about gear and techniques.

I'll keep checking around. Maybe something exists as a Facebook group (which I don't use), or a Discord channel somewhere.
I know there's some photography groups and I wouldn't be surprised to find field recording crossover there too.
Meat space. Great word for it. I've been working on breaking my bubble a bit hanging in the heat on the stoop with neighbors. It can be fun.

I need a break from being inside so I'm going to take my 15% coupon go GC and see if I can break my streak of never using them because nothing that I want is from a manufacturer not on the exclusion list. Whether I come back with something new (or used) or not, I'll be buying a cheeseburger at in-n-out. Wish me luck consuming!
