ProTools LE user with Tracktion Question

I'm new to Tracktion (thanks Mackie for nfr promotion) and I gotta say that I love it. I'm almost ready to give up ProTools LE completely except for couple of things. One of them is that in PT, there is a Gain plugin that scans through the selected section of audio, tells you what the peak volume is, and then allows you to overwrite that section with desired amount of gain reduction. Is there something like that available in Tracktion?

no, but couldn't you just use a compressor or a limiter?

nah, it's the helicopter. When it's flying upside down (it's a special helicopter, see) it acts like a lawnmower and trims peaks.

I'm usually using gain plugin on thing that have very short attack and decay, like a sudden hand clap, that will pass through before compression can take place.

or, split the clip around the loud bit, and manually drop the gain in the clip properties pane..

the only short falling of these methods in respect to what the OP was looking for is that they require you to manually locate the peaks. PTLE has automatic peak detection which makes life easier.
I still think a hard limiter would be good enough though.

Thanks for the ideas. I gotta say even with out the gain plugin equivalent, I'll probably stop using PTLE, cuz a) it doesn't have non-realtime bounce option and b) it requires digidesign hardware to be connected. I feel so free!

Hey underbiteman!
I just switched from Pro Tools LE (002) myself. I also feel so free! I think that Tracktion is superior to PTLE in the fact that it has unlimited audio and midi tracks and track groups, unlimited inserts per channel, as well as virtually unlimited free VST plug-ins available. Also, the UAD-1 and Powercore cards are essentially really low-cost Farm or HD process cards. Couple that with the price tag of Tracktion (I got mine free) and you're already way ahead. Especially when you consider the 12 channel Emu card I just bought for $165 has the same A/D converters as Pro Tools HD on it.
The main thing I'm having a hard time with is editing. I'm used to the power of slip, shuffle, grid, and spot modes. Nothing like that here. Also, the editing tools are pretty much non-existent. There is a place to select an external waveform editor. I wish PT free worked on XP- I'd use that and be set! I'm trying to use Wavelab lite that came with my soundcard but not happy with it yet.
The only reason I could see staying with Pro Tools is if you are a commercially successful studio who's clients are always asking for it. Even so, I had a recording business for 4 years, and I don't think ANY of my clients cared what the name of my software was. They just thought whatever I was doing was cool.
Another point - people say you need PT to be compatible with the big rooms but whenever I would track drums in a really nice studio and bring them back, I never used their PT system for anything other than a recorder. ANY system could have done that! Either just consolidate the waveforms or export Broadcast wave. So I STILL never saw the need.
Now that I'm a cheap, non-commercial songwriting studio, I can buy stuff that I think is good for ME, not what will impress anyone else.

I totally agree with you about editing. I do find myself thinking, 'Gee, I need some more buttons up top,' when I'm using tracktion. But I really can't complain when I got the software for free. I think Mackie made a good marketing move when it gave away tracktion for free. I would have never tried Tracktion and would have never considered buying T2, which I'm seriously considering now.

I totally agree. I thought of it as a little kid software, kinda like how I think of Pro Tracks plus or whatever comes with that Lexicon Omega thing. I was totally on my way to Sonar land before I tried this. I'm 90% sure I'll be buying T2 now.I think Mackie made a good marketing move when it gave away tracktion for free. Hi ya,
I also gave up protools LE for traction. At first, I thought protools was a great idea because that's what the big guys use. After a while, I realized I really didn't need all those bells and whistles. I just wanted a simple app that would help me produce music and not get in the way. I love traction and am eagerly awaiting T2. By the way, I have recently purchased a mac laptop and will be buying a usb or firewire audio interface, (maybe spike). I'll be putting my digi002 console on ebay.

but wot about TDM plugins????? i dont have pro tools & would love it becous there r so meny phatt TDM plugins, plz inlighten me, u lot seem to have pro tools all ready, R the tdm's not that impresave??
