Honestly if you want the sound of the PPG Wave in plugin form the best way to get that is the Waldorf Microwave Plugin

It just came out at the end of last year and as a modern plugin is leaps and bounds better

In the late 1980s Waldorf acquired the technology and some of the engineers from PPG and made an updated version of the PPG Wave. With all of the PPG Wavetables and then some

The Microwave Plugin is just way way better than either of the older PPG Wave plugins
Wouldn't the Blofeld plugin be the most uptodate generation?
I have the Blofeld also in both hardware and software

The Blofeld has the PPG Wave Wavetables also but it's much cleaner and modern sounding

The Microwave has that 1980s old gritty digital sound

Of course the real answer is just get both :)

Post

Microwave does NOT sound identical to a PPG. There are some similarities but there are also quite a few differences.

The PPG plugins don't either

Me too.

(And thank god now more restarting after installing now!!)
I recall that to be the case, but apparently, not so much. :tu:

I thought so. :hyper:

This is a great thing to wake up to. Attack is still one of my favorite drum synths.
Mine too... sorry it didn't work out for your specific set-up (thus far).
I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil

No demo right? Couldn't find one after a quick look.

Oddly enough it's not crashing DP11 as an AU, but so far it's crashy in Live 12, haven't messed with the VST2 version though, VST3 crashed right away. Still glad they updated it, and collecting a couple crash reports to send in.

Is it scaleble now? I had a look at the assets of Attack with resource hacker a while ago, because it's so tiny and saw 2x graphics but I found no way to activate them. Waldorf back then told me that they maybe work on that someday. It's a shame because Attack is awesome.

No, it's not scalable. I stick with two 1080p monitors out of three for this very reason.

Hmmm interesting statement. I always thought Blofled was much closer to Largo than to the PPG Wave. I didn't think the Blofeld synth could touch the sound of the PPG.

Post

It doesn't. It's not nearly cruddy enough.

You would be correct. Neither the Blofeld or Largo do that kind of reflected ghost harmonic thing that's crucial to getting the sound of the PPG Wave. Waldorf's PPG Wave doesn't really do it either.

It's my white whale. I'm not sure if Behringer's PPG does it, but I may have to buckle down and get it, because I can't seem to find anything in hardware or software that really satisfies. I was very disappointed by the 3rd Wave for this reason. You may as well use the freely available PPG wavetables in your favorite plugin, as they're just as close.

I've heard that there was some special way about how having a high playback rate that was tied to the pitch gave the PPG it's sound. Is there something about a plugin that makes that impossible? The closest thing I have is the Syntronik Blau instrument, and it nails it because it's a ROMpler based instrument that's just using multisamples of an actual PPG Wave. Sounds fantastic, but you're basically tied to the type of editing that you'd get on a sample based instrument, and that often means the filter and other modulation is baked into the sound. Alternately, UVI's Wave Runner bundle also has some nice PPG Wave sounds.

PPG Wave V.3 absolutely does do the harmonic imaging thing from what I recall (when in True PPG mode).

Hell, even Surge XT does that. It can absolutely be done in a plugin. You use the BLIT technique for your oscillator generator in order to emulate a variable rate DAC.

Behringer's Wave definitely does it, consider one of main PPG gurus (Hermann Seib) worked on it to make sure it is doing all the expected PPG things.

Post

Instant crashes in logic and live on latest macOS and apple silicon. Sent in crash reports etc to Waldorf support. 🤷‍♂️

Post

What is this harmonic imaging thing? Is there a preset in v3 that provides an example?
