Splitting a stereo recording into two mono recordings

I recorded a track in stereo (I didn't mean to) so when I try to pan left or right nothing changes. I need to make that stereo track into two mono tracks. I've tried a few different sources for help, but I've struck out. I would appriciate any assistance in getting the stereo recording into the mono tracks.
I've got the latest update of Waveform 13.

In the properties of any audio clip, by selecting a clip, you can manually specify which channel you need and it will be mono, by default, a stereo clip is connected with two, uncheck the channel that you do not need and you're done.
You also always have access to a built-in plugin called "Mono Switch", which is located when added to the plug in the "Waveform => Utility" catalog, which you can put directly on the audio clip, which allows you to monomize it exclusively.

Duplicate the stereo audio clip - Ctrl+drag it to another track or select it and press D then move the copy. De-select the Left Ch in one and the Right Ch in the other (as Maarid shows above.) You now have two separate mono audio clips on two separate tracks.
Left and Right channel selections can be done in the expanded Controls Panel at the bottom of the UI or in the Actions Panel (by default on the left).

Surely there must be consensus by now...

I don't see that I have an option to select left or right. Also, when I pan left the volume gets louder and when I pan right the volume gets quieter.Maarid wrote: Fri Jul 25, 2025 7:19 am In the properties of any audio clip, by selecting a clip, you can manually specify which channel you need and it will be mono, by default, a stereo clip is connected with two, uncheck the channel that you do not need and you're done.

If you do not see the Left Ch / Right Ch activation boxes, then this is the case because your clip is NOT stereo, but it is a clip which contains MONO audio.
If you now for this mono clip move its Pan either side away from the center, then it will only remain audible on the side to which you slide it. The more you slide it, the more it will be attenuated on the opposite side. It gives perceptually the feeling that it would become louder on the side you moved the slider to, and quieter on the opposite side. The center is at numeric value +0.00, while moving the slider to the left side and with preference audible the clip's contentent on teh left side, shows smaller values. Panning to the right side will show higer values.

Which is it? Maybe avoid using words like "it" and be very specific about what you're doing. The clips pan. The volume/pan plugin on the track pans. The master volume/pan pans. Your audio device or mixer also probably pans.yrj77s wrote: Fri Jul 25, 2025 6:40 pm when I pan left the volume gets louder and when I pan right the volume gets quieter.
Actually, a screenshot or video of everything would be more helpful. People have a tendency to ask for help and use words that either describe nothing specific or use the wrong terminology. We can usually get past that when we can see what you're seeing.
Surely there must be consensus by now...

Thank you for that explination. That would seem to make sense. I suppose what I need to figure out is why the individual track level meter shows audio left and right but the master level meter only shows left, while I do get left and right from output audio.pough wrote: Fri Jul 25, 2025 9:41 pm...

I assume that I am doing something wrong, but I don't what I am doing wrong.

Me neither. I don't know how your audio device is set up. I don't know what plugins you have on the master track. I don't know what plugins you have on the track. I don't know what the audio clip looks like. I don't know what happens in any other Edits, or if you've even tried that. I don't know if other recordings have worked for you.yrj77s wrote: Sat Jul 26, 2025 4:04 pm I assume that I am doing something wrong, but I don't what I am doing wrong.
What happens if you copy just that one audio clip into a brand new Edit using all the defaults? What happens when you use a different audio clip in place of the one you recorded? What happens when you use a VST instrument? What happens when you change the audio device type?
Surely there must be consensus by now...

OUTPUT of a MONO track defaults to L/R centered; but you can play with that for output to "position" instruments.
