Temp Folder

I'm new to Tracktion Waveform, using 13 Free. I'm coming from years of Adobe Audition as far back as when it was Cool Edit. I know Audition suggested using the largest drive as the location for the Temp folder. I was curious if Waveform is similar in its operation and use of temp files, and if so should I move/create a Waveform Temp folder on my largest drive. If this is the case, please let me know the best process and any concerns to watch out for.
I am grateful for all replies and look forward to a correct solution.

Welcome on board.
I don't think that there is any special need to care for this while still not running into some real issue due to the currently chosen location. I would just use it as preconfigured. By the way, You anyway will not enjoy working with your computer, if any of your storage locations is already at the limit before even having started to use it. But if it comforts you, then changing the location won't harm either. Just do what makes you feel good. I recommend concerning the storage, and if having the choice, then install your DAW, its accessories, including its temp folder, and all your projects and contents, on the fastest storage, on your internal NVMe for instance.

I try and give my main OS drive a bit of protection from being constantly written to, with one eye on TBW. So for me, projects and temp folder go on secondary drives. Not sure if necessary, but just how I decided to set it up when I built my PC.

I thank you all for the suggestions. I asked because I'm not even quite sure where the Temp folder is for Waveform. I just put together a new PC, and like talby I would not like the temp stuff to be written to and utilizing the C: OS drive. I have a secondary SSD which has about 3TB of free storage and a third external HDD with 5TB open. I'd rather the program write to either of those then taxing my OS drive.
If anyone knows of any info on where the Waveform Temp folder is located and how I might change the path to a new Temp folder in one of the other drives I'd appreciate the info.
THANKS!

Like dysjoint, I will move my temp folder out of OS drive so as to minimize compromise of that drive.
I'll take the Temp folder and its contents and move it to my SSD. That should have Waveform working smoothly and as quickly as possible and keep my OS working similarly.
Very pleased to have you folks to bounce off of. Good to have this forum, and I'll help where I can as well!

I had another thought about changing folders to a drive other than the OS drive. Please let me know your thoughts on changing the File Locations for Quick Render Location and any others listed in the File Locations section.
It seems to me that in addition to the Temp Directory it may be best to relocate the Quick Render Location as well to a drive other than OS drive. I suppose Waveform offers these options for a good reason, perhaps not to tax the OS drive and prevent corruption.
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

It depends on your workflow and what you are doing a lot of. I keep Temp, Quick Render, Projects and all my samples/libraries on secondary drives and it works fine for me.

I have everything on the one internal drive, in one partition. It is my main and only computer, which I intensely use 14 hours a day, for leisure time entertainment and for professional work. And it runs fine like this for years. Really, it is more a question of how YOU want to see it organized than any technical need to have it organized in a special way. That's why I repeat to say: Just do what makes you feel good.
Still, consider to follow the very serious recommendation, I actually see it as an obligation, to have a backup system set up and properly scheduled, and then writing the backups of course to external drives. Seriously consider to have more than one physical backup drive, and to always have at least one of them fully offline (all cables physically disconnected) and stored at a different place (building) than your robbed and burned down home office.
Put your thoughts once into a backup system worth its name, and then don't complicate things anymore with spreading apps and data over custom locations. The defaults will just work.

More likely because of user requests, including as a workaround for smaller drive sizes (eg on laptops etc.)wifiapply wrote: Wed Aug 20, 2025 5:09 pm It seems to me that in addition to the Temp Directory it may be best to relocate the Quick Render Location as well to a drive other than OS drive. Taxing a modern (ie solid state) drive is pretty hard, though. And strictly speaking, your boot drive is the one most likely to be on the fastest interface (eg M2) so even less likely.
An idiot on Set Theory:

Thanks to all for the thoughts. I'll likely move Temp and Render to non OS SSD. if it's problematic in any way or slow I'll revert. And I'll keep you posted so more folks can get info on this. Cheers!
