Also, the market creates a need, and people end up buying stuff they don't necessarily need because the market self-propels itself. People don't necessarily think they need vintage emulations, but the mere fact that software houses shove them in your face and promise that your mixes will become warmer, fuller, better leads people at least to second-guess themselves. If only unconsciously.

Are we adults or not? Anyone who lets their purchasing decision be influenced by pure marketing rhetoric has only themselves to blame. Actually, my parents already taught me how to control my shopping urges.
You overestimate yourself and the independence of your decisions. See, for instance, it's right there: your parents *taught* you how to control your shopping urges.
I'm naturally dependent on others when it comes to interpersonal relationships, yes. But when it comes to buying tools and all other material things, I've been an adult since my early twenties. Of course, I was sometimes more dependent on external influences in my early years. :dog:

But I've learned from experience and am still learning to improve small projects, every day. Now, almost 52, I can say with conviction: I'm not a slave to the market. No reason for me to play the victim card.

It's not about playing the victim card, it's about stating a fact. Maybe it doesn't apply to you (any more), but it does apply to others.

My parent taught me to wipe my butt after pooping, now I'm a slave to corporate butthole! My only way to stick it to the man is my excessive farting!

I find this whole thread bizarro-world, because what's the alternative? Get the International Court of Justice to step in and order a fixed amount of software emulations to be made, and no more? Should a corporate titan buy up all the small developers and kill all the competition so that their software is what we all get to use?

No, we don't. Because we already have UAD.

So I only use modeled hardware. I want my music to sound like it could have come out of a studio in the '80s. I want to use the same sort of signal path and make the same sort of mixing moves for the same reasons. I want the limitations and idiosyncrasies of the gear that made those albums what they were. For me, making music is like a historical reenactment. It's why I do it. And it beats pretend dying in the mud on a civil war battlefield.
THIS MUSIC HAS BEEN MIXED TO BE PLAYED LOUD SO TURN IT UP

That's why you need a big mixer bridge, you need room for the candy.

I will say its tempting as a new plugin developer to try to latch on and emulate vintage hardware but I'm not sure how much more I should contribute to the issue :D

Yeah. I like this quote from the same thing you linked:
So for me I have no interest defending digital vs analog or whether I prefer one over the other. I use the best from each to get the job done, end of story.

And that's worthy of being featured in a signature soon...
