Which reverbs are used in video and film production?

Bro, wow whining about people here for calling you out.seafire wrote: Tue Sep 02, 2025 8:44 pmOf course. This isn't a movie/film/soundtrack forum, where you can find information from professionals in the industry. This is a forum about plugins (and occasionally hardware, whatever) populated by a shit load of numpties who mostly take the piss.
Problem with that?

I work in the industry on the tech side and there is no single answer because the audio guys vary from young, tech-obsessed nerds and plugin enthusiasts to old, grumpy folks who do things like they have always done until they get to retire, and everything in between. It’s a creative field where only results matter, not how they are reached as long as shit is done on time. There are a lot of people working in cinema and tv who don’t give a shit about the technology and only care about their creative task, and can barely turn on their gear because there’s guys like me who design and build their control rooms and keep them running.
Ticket flow is sometimes literally:
“CRITICAL: Audio Edit 34 Computer monitor is broken!!! Need new one ASAP!!”
Resolved: Monitor power cable was disconnected by user to make room for phone charger
Some of them like to try and test all the plugins (rigorously, it’s their living) and the reverb they use depends on what is their current favourite and what suits the task. Some use whatever Protools comes with, or whatever the workstation they were assigned to has installed. Some use a lot of convolution and capture their own impulse responses on set. Atmos/multichannel capacity is a requirement for a lot of work.

Lol, Valhalla reverbs have been used “professionally” (whatever that means) in music production , live sound and movie/tv broadcasting work.h66 wrote: Tue Sep 02, 2025 9:55 pm Interesting answers, reverbs are a constant topic here. If the $50 Valhalla Room plugin is good enough for Led Zeppelin (Celebration Day live dvd/bluray etc), I imagine it’s “professional” enough to be used in any instance that would call for that reverb sound.

Often the player was hearing instructions from an in-ear monitor. It could be a computer, which had effects made by other software, or a person, who was in an environment and also in your ear.h66 wrote: Sun Aug 31, 2025 9:20 pm ok, example: Family Guy - Peter in the production hall of Pawtucket Brewery or Stewie speaks from his room to the others in the living room and so on
If you are adept at making (or finding) IRs, then pretty much any 'convolution reverb' (which loads them) will do. I personally tend to favor this one: https://www.audiothing.net/effects/fog-convolver/Ah_Dziz wrote: Mon Sep 01, 2025 10:02 pm Speakerphone is designed for this type of work and has impulse responses of "next room", "bathroom" etc. any convolution based processor can do this and productions often capture IRs of any places they record dialogue for this purpose. If all the spatialization is faked, I'd recommend speakerphone unless you have lots of experience. It will match many productions that people are familiar with by virtue of being one of the go-to processors for this type of work for years.
If not, then Speakerphone is your friend. [2c]

That one does look like a good value, but I do like having a Swiss Army knife of sorts, and for that, Speaker phone is awesome.Shabdahbriah wrote: Wed Sep 03, 2025 8:43 pmzerocrossing wrote: Mon Sep 01, 2025 7:32 pmI don’t know about TV or movies, but I use Speakerphone for game work. If he cant, are you going to assert that that means that some of the most lauded reverb plugins out there are absolutely never used for those things?Gam456 wrote: Wed Sep 03, 2025 8:40 pmCan you prove your statement ?metalifuxx wrote: Wed Sep 03, 2025 7:29 pm Lol, Valhalla reverbs have been used “professionally” (whatever that means) in music production , live sound and movie/tv broadcasting work.
Because I would personally think its a pretty safe assumption that at least one person out there has done.
To me, Supermassive in particular screams for use in film etc sound design, but you're saying absolutely every single professional film sound designer out there would avoid it?

Sounds unlikely. Ive never met a professional who chose their tools solely based on pricepoint, rather than, say, functionality. And €400 is a full month's salary for some sound designers on this planet.h66 wrote: Tue Sep 02, 2025 9:55 pmSound professionals start at €400 (not like, for example, Valhalla).

1) Dont tell me what to do.
2) Read properly. I didnt make any assumption, I stated what I considered would be a reasonable assumption. Which is a rather different thing.
3) I consider that stating a reasonable assumption, identifying it as such and providing a logically consistent argument for it is a perfectly valid response to an unreasonable assumption.
4) Your inference that a logically consistent reasonable assumption is false is fallacious.
5) Given your response, you maybe want to make sure you're not being hypocrite enough to assume you have insight into what I do or do not know.
6. Given your response, you maybe want to consider your own history of making assumptions in your posts.
7) Dont tell me what to do.
