If you use, for example, TurboComp - you are able to unlink channels, BUT! It uses the AVERAGE level between channels while it should take, I guess, the MAX level to behave as a Limiter. If you use it as is, you'll get plenty of uncontrolled peaks (for example I set -3, I get up to 0 and 0+ peaks).
Lots of limiters out there (izotope, fabfilter) are LINKED by default and you get no peaks above what you've set the threshold.
