And guess what? They had something that could be used at least as a sort of drum editor, namely "Hyper Edit" (some oldtime Logic users may remember). It was partially excellent.
But then some idiot at Apple decided it was time to take it out with the event of Logic X.

There's also been a most excellent function called "Hyperdraw", allowing you to edit MIDI CC data straight on a part. Now you have to use automation and select the data you want to edit all the time and also can't stay within your preferred zoom level.

And don't even get me started on anything related to zooming. They just royally f**ked up multiple zooming functions with Logic X - and it's possibly been the best zooming DAW until that moment.

Really, these guys have lost their minds.

but they got long faders in 11.1 when they get wide faders in 11.2

11.2 will be too early to see what Ricky has added to the team but I do have faith after wide faders in 11.2 with his addition to the team.

I say this as someone who misses logics samplers more than anything. I hope this daw gets all the love in the world from apple.

Isn't the hypereditor still there? It just defaults to being the Step Editor by default, but you should still be able to hyperdraw as far as I'm aware.

it used to be called the hyper editor, they changed the name of it to "Step Editor" but yes its still there

I the piano roll editor is what used to be hyper editor?

Post

No, Step Editor. As mentioned above. It even says "Step Editor" on top of the tab. Google is your friend!

Oh, you folks are right, Hyper Edit is now in fact Step Edit. A) my apologies, b) my thanks, this is one of the best surprises in a while (no idea how I missed it, though...).

Hyperdraw however has been moved, it's now a subset of the automation (aka region based automation) and sucks quite a lot as switching automation on/off is royally messing up the zoom memory.

I remember back in a days of Logic Studio 7/8/9 when David Earl (@sflogicninja), arguably one of the best Logic Pro tutors alive, joined Apple Logic team I was thrilled and excited to see his input on future versions.

After release of Logic Pro X, users were mostly shocked and annoyed with new UI which still is in some ways step backwards compared to Logic 9 and still Logic 11 drags some heavy old ways of doing things in illogical and more than necessary overcomplicated steps compared to more modern DAWs like Bitwig or Studio One.

However I do like the change for new samplers they did compared to the old EXS24. Now if they only would improve that archaic browser... :ud:

so it should be this week or next to get some shiny news

Hopefully ARA integration for Apple Silicon Logic users.

To be fair there will always be issues with the original design of a DAW VS the modern features they try to implement. For instance Bitwigs keyboard shortcuts are miles above the rest simply because Bitwig doesn't have legacy features they need to support, Live started out before clip launchers were common, so single keyboard shortcuts do not really exist in Live because they were mostly used for possible clip launching. So you get Live which is super easy to use in most ways with three key combination shortucts for the most common features. :dog:

Logics replacement of the simple commands for changing tools, and the ability to assign right click to zooming is a huge let down though. I get why right click became contextual menus, but the tools being two shortcuts away is just wrong! :x

...except for ARA still not working in Logic. But, here's hoping the next update fixes that.

One of the coolest features, imo, is the stem splitter. I’ve taken 35-40 year-old cassette original recordings, made with almost no fx, and split them. The 2.2 version is an improvement over the 2.0 version. Then, by applying judicious use of compression, delay and reverb, I’ve brought those old recordings to life (I transferred them to digital around 15 years ago). The ability to pull a mixed song apart like that is voodoo, imo.

I've tried a few stem separation and imo Logic's sounds really nice and it separates more elements than a few of them too. Very slick stuff for sure.
