My question was simply about the availability of the JP 8080 firmware on the official website, which is non-existent, while the JP 8000 firmware is

The reason there is no update, for the 8080, is that the firmware it shipped with was the final version. It’s been said a v1.04 update was briefly made available, by Roland, in 1999. This was quickly withdrawn for reasons unknown.

There’s still room for Roland to create a superior plugin experience if so inclined. There are some downsides to an emulation, not the least of which can be CPU use. But it’d mean refraining from their usual penchant for leaving bits out (AKA Why some people still have interest in the JD800 / 990 being emulated etc. )

Hopefully it's a reminder that companies shouldn’t just sit on their digital legacy and, where they provide modern plugins based on it, don’t half-arse the effort. Otherwise others are prepared to step in. Nostalgia is a powerful motivator and people want the instruments, which defined the music of their formative years, preserved.

There is another thread where this is discussed in detail (the original Virus ROM I think). The outcome was no one knows, no global rules on this type of IP and there has never been a court case so no president. Common sense says if you own the hardware you are OK to use it, if you don't you probably shouldn't. Once you try it you will probably realise the VSTs you have sound better and are more feature rich anyway...its just a bit of fun.

Yeah, I know it’s difficult to know every case, but man, reality is complex. I used to have a Microkorg and it broke, so I don’t have it anymore... so could I use a ROM? (no response expected, it’s just that reality is complex). Yeah, it’s really complex, but I don’t know — maybe there are other general legal recommendations from people here who know their stuff and are reading us.

Yeah, but believe me, Korg won´t give me a license because my Microkorg broke. Totally different product than hardware or emulated hardware in nature.
