I think this is because the first model of Color Drive mostly produces odd order harmonics, while Vertigo does tube-style saturation (mostly even order harmonics = "warmer"). In the Color Drive video he says that they plan to add more saturation types, including tube based circuits with that have more even order harmonics. I agree that VSS-2 is a total steal for 10 bucks (I was late to the party, but got it for 20 bucks, which is still fantastic value, unless you have no need for another channelstrip / console EQ / compressor type plugin).sqigls wrote: Mon Oct 27, 2025 9:35 pm it's ok, but Vertigo VSS-2 was recently $10 and a much more usable tube saturation in my comparison and opinion.
this one distorts too early to use as a saturator, very much more a distortion. I'm sure some mileage may vary, but i was expecting some warm sweetspots. It just kinda goes straight into fuzz.

Oh well, that explains it even better!kraster wrote: Tue Oct 28, 2025 1:51 amI actually find it quite subtle to be honest. The input control controls the amount of transformer saturation and the drive knob controls the tube saturation. You can have both at zero and the saturation takes a while to kick in. You can also decouple the output transformer.sqigls wrote: Mon Oct 27, 2025 9:35 pm it's ok, but Vertigo VSS-2 was recently $10 and a much more usable tube saturation in my comparison and opinion.

One thing that makes a big difference is to use the crossover control to exclude the bottom end from any of the distortion stages. With a lot of bottom end going through the circuit it can get blown out really quickly.

New public beta version available.
Default for telemetry is now opt-off and you must opt-in if you want.We just pushed out v0.10.0 of Color Drive (Public Beta) - and this one’s a big step forward.
The main focus: Preset Manager redesign and a more refined way of handling any online connectivity.
We know some of you had questions about how our plugins connect online, so this update is designed to make everything even more visible and of course fully optional (default is offline)
The same system will roll out to the Relab 176 and any other relevant plugins soon as part of maintenance updates.
Plus if you bought the Relab 176 directly from Relab during its pre-release or intro period, as a thank you, you can now claim a free Color Drive license.

Now available to buy in early access.
So, we’re opening Color Drive for early access before the official release.
If you already own the Relab 176 from the pre-release or intro period, Color Drive is free for a limited time, as a thank-you for being an early supporter of this plugin from the start.
If you’re already a Relab customer, you can get it for only $29.
And if you’re new to Relab, it’s $49 during this early window (MSRP $79).

ok i've given it another bash
well, for those who thought True Iron was subtle, you're gonna be straining your ears to hear this one i think.
Can add some magic to snares, hi hats. Kind of has that "open the door" effect, good on buses. Keep it well the hell away from reggae bass though
The crossover control is kinda vital in this respect.
I haven't done any peak vs perceived volume testing yet, but I might buy it for that potential bus magic. I do like what it's doing to my hi-hats in this particular test project.
For people who are getting good mileage from it - what type of sounds/instruments is it working well with?

Seems to be quite the fluctuation with some presents - Parallel Cali Tube Crush is one example. No extra oversampling from what I can see. Hope they optimise this some more.

there's no way from what i can see, to disable oversampling real-time?

This and their 176 comp are just incredible. Great work, love it on every bus.

Yes. So the total cost became not so expensive after all.
Every day takes figuring out all over again how to f#ckin’ live.
