Oh, you mean the modulation points. I didn't do much with them. I mainly used Absynth as a player. I don't even know if I ever made a library for it.Echoes in the Attic wrote: Fri Dec 05, 2025 9:16 pmThe more you bring to the envelope party, the more wild things get.wagtunes wrote: Fri Dec 05, 2025 9:00 pmWhat's a breakpoint?Echoes in the Attic wrote: Fri Dec 05, 2025 8:55 pmHow many breakpoints are you gonna use? Hate to break this to you bud but your opinion on it all is as useless as anyone else's. Foundational product? Sure. Flagship? Stopped being that when they stopped updating it 15 years ago.Milkman wrote: Fri Dec 05, 2025 6:53 amAbsynth, as anyone whose opinion is worth the gum on the bottom of my shoe knows, is one of NI's flagship, foundational products.DashOfLime wrote: Fri Dec 05, 2025 6:35 amAbsynth 5 came out in 2010. These reactions are always so weird. It's a company, not a way of life. At this point who f**king cares what happened. Clearly someone changed their mind and v6 is coming out soon and the original developer is involved.
I hope Reaktor is next as it could use some love.
The above is about the fact that Absynth stopped being updated in 2010 with it's last major release, before any of the equity stuff started. Do you not understand timelines? You want to blame private equity, I'm saying the lack of updates and "parting ways" happened before any of that started. And all that said...it doesn't make a f**king difference since there is a major update coming out any day now.Milkman wrote: Fri Dec 05, 2025 6:53 am That's the reason we are having this conversation right now, and the fact that it wasnt updated is another black eye for NI. The PE nonsense happened in a couple phases, and NI's decision to part ways with him(Brian) was part of a series of unfortunate decisions made by NI up to today. Not sure what the above is about.
I said "its a company, not a way of life" but if you want to play there...it's a piece of software, not a way of life. I have an SH-2 from 1979 sitting right next to me and a Pro-One from 1982 also sitting right next to me. I have trombone that I played in high school 40 years ago that was passed on to my son that he played thru high school and now in college. My Cobalt-8 would have survived Modal completely shutting down and my System-8 would work just fine if Roland disappeared. They have not had one issue due to private equity, subscriptions, or anything else. If you want a "way of life" buy hardware.Milkman wrote: Fri Dec 05, 2025 6:53 am Its an instrument, and we all know what instruments are to real musicians - a way of life. Do you think its anything less? Do you think instruments are just 'apps' that we rent from corporations, who expire them every few years to make sure we buy the next thing? If so, we wont and cant agree.

Yes but I'm referring to when the PE folks had a majority investment in the company. And even with 2013 as the first injection of cash Absynth's last major update came out 3 years prior.EvilDragon wrote: Fri Dec 05, 2025 7:29 am The first PE injection actually happened in 2013. Apple has an excellent record of backwards compatibility. Various vendors do not, usually because of drivers or low-level code. Apple has not been shy about breaking things to keep moving forward ever since Jobs came back. But that I could run PowerPC code on Intel Macs and Intel stuff on Apple Silicon thanks to Rosetta...and most of it worked...proves Apple's excellent track record.zerocrossing wrote: Fri Dec 05, 2025 2:38 pmSure, as artists we bond with our tools. We both shape them and are shaped by them. That said, Absynth 5 didn't disappear when it was discontinued, just like my G&L Skyhawk didn't disappear when Leo Fender died, or recently when the company closed its doors. I run 3 monitors on my system, two 4ks for the DAW and modern stuff, and one old one for old plugins that no longer scale. If you're telling me that Absynth 5 doesn't work on your new Apple laptop, that's on you. It's common knowledge that Apple has a poor track record with backwards compatibility.Milkman wrote: Fri Dec 05, 2025 6:53 amIts an instrument, and we all know what instruments are to real musicians - a way of life. But try to run a program from 1997 on most recent macOS and you won't be able to, unless you're going to use virtual machines. That's the sort of backwards compatibility we're usually talking about, and Apple is not providing that.

Windows hardly does either, 97 software would be mostly sketchy for audio stuff, nor does the vendor this thread is referencing. NI depreciated and stopped supporting as many products as they have out now. Even the main format for Windows in VST2 is depreciated.EvilDragon wrote: Fri Dec 05, 2025 10:39 pm But try to run a program from 1997 on most recent macOS and you won't be able to, unless you're going to use virtual machines. In the bigger picture though, I hate how any time it's mentioned that some 10 year old software is being updated this jag off conversation has to pop up, like it changes anything at all or adds to the conversation in any meaningful way.

Well, I still have early NI stuff working on Windows 10 with their original pre-EOL activations. Also, certain hardware synth editors from 1997 (like that one for Yamaha AN1x) still work perfectly fine. I mentioned 1997 for a reason.
Definitely better backwards compatibility on Win than on Mac. And now back to Absynth.

Isn't Windows 11 out?EvilDragon wrote: Fri Dec 05, 2025 10:56 pm Well, I still have early NI stuff working on Windows 10 with their original pre-EOL activations. Also, certain hardware synth editors from 1997 (like that one for Yamaha AN1x) still work perfectly fine. I mentioned 1997 for a reason.

The point remains, you lose activation of certain soft synths you're not getting them back, not all software has made it to Windows 11 from 97, better backwards compatibility, sure, perfect? far from it. Platform wars are stupid, neither system is perfect, and excuses made for not keeping things up to date are just excuses.
Absynth was Mac only to start (so was Zebra), Reaktor was Windows only, that alone proves the validity of both platforms IMO.

Its been in phases, yeah. I started paying more attention to that around 2018, and then I saw those large layoffs(2020?), and then I realized who was injecting that cash and away we went. One day I was literally helping D-One help others(my name on the forum was Jeremy) with maschine+mk3 routing troubleshooting, helping people understand his guide and contributing to the forum, and then the forum rebooted and everything went nuts. Suddenly D-One turned adversarial toward me, despite years of good relations, because I complained about how things were going.EvilDragon wrote: Fri Dec 05, 2025 7:29 am The first PE injection actually happened in 2013. Such is life in the 'high performance world' of investment brokerages I suppose.

<yawn> ignored. Im not here for this. I spoke to Brian myself, and he published a video that you can watch on the subject(to do with how unhappy he was with this decision). Im not confused about any aspect of this, and the phases(dates) of NI laying off personnel to look profitable, then becoming acquired by PE, are less important to me than what happened in the end.DashOfLime wrote: Fri Dec 05, 2025 9:52 pmHate to break this to you bud but your opinion on it all is as useless as anyone else's. Yes. I still use Absynth5 semi frequently. I was replying to the 'dash of lime' person, and I dont own apple computers or devices of any kind. I am a *nix, some windows, open source fan, I am not a capitalist, I am 100% right to repair, etc, and this isnt my topic.zerocrossing wrote: Fri Dec 05, 2025 2:38 pmSure, as artists we bond with our tools. I'm thinking about making a P-Funk/G-Funk library for it.wagtunes wrote: Fri Dec 05, 2025 9:26 pm Oh, you mean the modulation points. I didn't do much with them. I mainly used Absynth as a player. I don't even know if I ever made a library for it.

Is it possible that Absynth 6 will be released as a Kontakt or Reaktor instrument?
Is it possible that Absynth 6 will be available only by subscription?
If Absynth 6 happened in 2015 now we will be waiting for Absynth 8.
