Do you have any links about Underworld using the V? Rick Smith has had a real 2600 since at least 1993 (when Rez was released), it's hard to imagine him using a plugin version.

Omnisphere does the best CS-80 by the way. And no I've never heard one in real life, so I actually have no idea.

I've never heard this, and I've always looked out for Underworld gear lists. Seen them use Absynth, Imposcar, Maschine, Logic synths. Never heard of them using Arturia. They certainly did use to use the real 2600 (ie. rez/cowgirl).

By the way if you didn't know, Ana2 has an excellent rez patch emulating the famous 2600 synth sequence. Only the first part of the sequence though, not the off grid odd timing part towards the end of the loop.

The XILS sounded interesting and lively but perhaps a little saturated somehow. The Softube sounded plasticky but that might be a quirk of the what the guy was doing. I don't buy into the Arturia-isn't-good meme, to be honest.
Orbital and Underworld specifically use the Arp 2600 V. Perhaps the Korg sounds better a la Bones, which I never have heard; and I love the Arturia one's sound. It goes to show that Arturia gets too much hate for sure, when they do hit some nice, sweet spots.
Not true

Both use the hardware. Paul Hartnol has the Korg reissue too.

They do use the hardware but I have read in certain gigs they use the soft emus and like them as well.

EDIT: They use Imposcar and praise Arturia but do not use the Arp 2600 V. You are correct.

Sure, they're definitely using alternatives live. There are plenty of synths that could get close enough for live, and I wouldn't be surprised if they're simply performing with pre-recorded tracks. I'm surprised to see that Underworld is still touring!

Saw them live just last year - they were brilliant, one of the best live gigs I've been to.

Wayoutware TimeWARP2600 was endorsed by the original ARP designer then development ceased and it was eventually sold off to inmusic. 2600V is one of 3 Arturia synths they've yet to rework with brand new modelling

The Model 77 is on sale right now so I decided to demo it.

I demoed it along with the GX-80 and the CS-80 V. I should of went for Xils' version too but I didn't think of it at the time.

The Model 77 is very warm, has nice clarity and has a lot of punch.

The GX-80 has really nice bass, great pad-like ambient sounds, and nice upper range for hitting nice leads.

The CS-80 V hits really nice with saws, and the mid to upper range frequencies can get some nice grit.

Overall, I think the Model 77 is my favorite, followed barely, and I mean barely, because of taste, would
be the GX-80 because I go for more of its kind of sounds it can produce well. And it's a little quirky, so I kinda like that aspect. The Arturia one I would go last on, but it's very, very nice in its own right- but, it can get the cpu hit like the Model 77, and although I don't find really anything wrong with it, it would simply be my third pick.

All in all, this would just be my own personal assessment and IMHO... If I were to demo The Eighty, I would imagine it would be warmer than the Cherry and Arturia ones because of its reputation, so it would probably shoot up to probably second. Currently Model 77 is on sale cheaper than GX-80, but GX-80 I believe comes with more presets and the browser is a lot better to me than Softube's.

Oh, at the GUI. I definitely like the Model 77's GUI the most. It has the least going on with the dual synth layer because you can alternate between oscillators. Both the GX and CS have all of the many sliders on the one page and it just is incredibly overwhelming. Softube went the extra mile or what have you and deliberately circumvented this irritation by focusing on it being dual layer and made it as such. The Eighty I heard, and after a quick gander at it, seems pretty active in its design like the other two that are. With that being said, I would probably prefer the Model 77 over it, unless the sound is that much better. I would doubt that because the Model 77 is incredible in its warmth and beautiful punch. With that going for it, and its wonderful GUI it would be hard to beat. The only thing I really don't like is the browser and it is like all of the other Softube browsers- not very nice to my taste as of now.

Model 77 is warmer than The Eighty. IMO, The Eighty is better for those bright, brassy Vangelis sounds, and Model 77 is better for the smooth, warm Toto sounds.

To be fair, my opinion of the Korg Arp 2600 is heavily influenced by the fact it has a modelled SEM filter as an extra treat. I don't think I've ever even installed the Arturia one, even though I've had a license for the V Collection for ages.
