I can only change velocity and probability in the step clip but not pan, is this really missing? Is there any other way to set pan for step clip notes?

No I'd like to drive it from the step clip so I can introduce targeted pan variations when activating different clips, also I sometimes use a regular synth.

Step clips are really just midi, aren't they? Midi technically has a pan control (cc#10) but it's not per-note and it's almost certainly ignored by a number of plugin instruments. The relationship between plugins and midi is kinda loose.
If there is a way to do what you want it will be within the plugin and might be exposed as an automatable parameter. Adding automation to a step clip is now possible.
Or maybe MPE allows for such things. That will also depend on the plugin.

Surely there must be consensus by now...

Thanks all, I wasn't aware that this feature is basically non-existent in almost all DAWs (except FL Studio but only with internal instruments). I thought somehow CC10 could be used for assignable synths.
