Spaceship Delay The Great Escape

Post

Spaceship Delay has been updated today (HOHOHO)! The code base has been cleaned up / rewritten, to make the code faster, to improve some of its sound signature aspects, and to make it compatible with the last versions of our OSes.

To ensure that everything is up to date with my current standards and good practices, unfortunately I had to make some breaking changes soundwise and on the parameters system side. I added in the code some functions which translate automatically the old system format to the new one (presets and DAW recall), but the automation might be broken in your old projects.

So the project has finally been "rebooted", meaning that you will find a new version now, that you should consider as a public beta (the RC version will be the 1.5.0). There will be more updates very soon that are already planned, without having to wait 10 more years  I'll talk about that a bit later.

Here are the changes in Spaceship Delay 1.4.3 since the very last version I uploaded:
  • All the original plug-in code has been rewritten / optimized / cleaned up
  • The plug-in is now notarized and natively supported on the very last Apple computers
  • Added resizing feature
  • Optimized the spring reverb feature with a new state-of-the-art convolution algorithm
  • Added drive and tone controls for all the saturation algorithms
  • All the processing going on in the delay signal path is now oversampled
  • Increased the range for the cutoff frequency parameters
  • Updated the parameters system (labels can be double clicked for accurate edition and display the parameters value on mouseOver)
  • Solved all the drifting issues with delay values
  • Solved some issues with the synthesizer filters mapping for cutoff frequencies
  • Improved the phaser algorithm with more feedback capabilities and a new zero delay feedback structure
  • Updated the mix control behaviour for the delay and spring reverb
  • Replaced the attack control with a new control called "dynamics" feature an improved attack mode for positive values, and a new ducking mode for its negative values
  • Added a new location option for the FX section inside the delay signal path for feedback fun
  • Updated the behaviour of the saturation algorithms Tone control
  • The tutorial is now embedded directly in the binary
  • Added a bottom section displaying situational / interactive help on each parameter on mouseOver (like in The Great Escape)
  • Added buttons on the top section of the plug-in for direct access to the tutorial and some settings
  • Supports loading of old presets and DAW recall with the previous versions
  • Solved mountains of issues and bugs from the original plug-in (some of them are still there, working on them at the moment)
  • Added a VST3 version of the plug-in in the binaries
  • Dropped the 32 bits and VST2 versions (forever) and the AAX version (for now)
  • There is a spaceship now in Spaceship Delay
In the RC candidate / version 1.5.0, I will solve the remaining issues (I see you the missing clicks on the comboboxes and the english translation problems), add new presets using the new capabilities, rework the user interface (yes it's briiiiggghhhht), and I'll add a few surprises, that will be developed and released incrementally, because I have big plans both for Spaceship Delay and Musical Entropy in 2026, with Spaceship Delay that will be free forever :hyper:

Somethingh I would like to say now is that I do not want to make it a direct competitor to other free / commercial delay plug-ins. Adding tons of new features everywhere is boring! I do not want something like that to be a source of cognitive complexity at use too, just to get new but very hidden sweet spots, or because delay plug-in number 45 has this and delay plug-in number 46 has that. Instead, what I would like to be able to succeed is to develop Spaceship Delay further, following the original philosophy I add for it, and to make it even more different from the other plug-ins in the market. You'll understand soon what I have in mind on that side ;)

And I will secure some time for all of those personal projects (yes going commercial, but on something else), which was 100% allocated to my freelance dev job until now (I did work in the past for JUCE, Sonic Academy, AudioThing, Wavesfactory, Audiority, Two Notes, process.audio...).

Have fun with the new Spaceship Delay, looking forward to your feedback, and I wish you all happy end of the year holidays!

Congratulations!

Unfortunately, it crashed VstHost and Studio One pro. Crashed immediately upon loading in VstHost. In S1, it showed the welcome screen. When I removed it so that I can reload, it crashed S1.

Specs: Windows 11 latest, Studio One 7.2.x also latest. Using VST3 format.
Let me know if you want any additional info.

I am excited to see this back in action. Happy holidays.

Thank you very much for the nice words and the crash report!

I have just uploaded a new version of the plug-in in the same location, it should remove your issue. It happened at startup before the presets are copied and pasted at the right location, it should be fine now ;)

I still need to buy the infamous EV/OV/Azure certification, to be able to release the classic installers and to remove the need to do this manually.

Great to have this back and modernised, used to use it a lot so will be fun to revisit.

The inevitable question: as you did a linux version of the Great escape, would a linux version of this be feasible...?

Thank you, Ivan! Spaceship Delay is a favorite at my studio, we use it all the time.

I'm curious too, as my home rig utilizes Ubuntu Studio running REAPER.

Yes for Linux :D

Thank you! What a nice Christmas present <3

Thanks for updating this cool plugin! I always liked how slightly unpredictable it was.

Using the VST3 in Windows 11 and I'm experiencing a bug where if I go to Settings > About Spaceship Delay, go back to the main interface and close the plugin, every time I reopen it it opens on the About page.

(Also I hope this isn't too cheeky, but if I could make a Christmas wish, it would be that Spaceship Delay had a stereo width control)

Post

unfortunately it (the AU that is) doesn't work in logic 10.5.1 under mojave
doesn't even show...

v 1.0.6 works well btw...

Nice catch, should be solved in the last version of the binary available right now ;)

I have just discovered that the very last version of XCode needs a new step to ensure that all the compiled plug-ins include properly the no ARM target and are truely "universal binaries" even if I stated so everywhere else. It should be fine now if you download the plug-ins again, since their size have doubled, tell me if it's all right on your side ;)

About the pan / stereo width options, I'll give them proper thinking, as there are many ways to add more stereo capabilities, but not all of them are good / efficient ;)

Very cool of you to update this plugin. Here is some feedback from testing it in "Reason".

No automation parameter was available for changing delay type (single/ping pong/dual) , and no parameter was available for changing Sync type (free, BPM, slave to DAW). Both of those parameters could be automated in the old version.

YES!

now it is working !

thank you!

Thanks so much for updating this!
Since you mentioned possibly re-doing the gui, I thought I would throw this out there:
I've always had trouble determining which label goes with which knob in the first column of knobs, and the Modulation column. I just seem to get lost. The label above and below a knob are nearly the same spacing. If the labels were dropped down closer to the knobs, I think it would be much clearer (at least for me).
That's all I've got. It's a great plugin, and I'm super happy to have it in VST3!
