audio engine oddities

I already mentioned some of this in a current (yet unanswered) bug report, but then I encountered more issues/oddities/anomalies... the audio engine does really weird things on my machine and I'm starting this thread to see if others encounter similar/potentially related issues:
- if I untick "run audio engine when stopped" the panic button flashes. If I click it and start and stop playback, the engine keeps running. If I keep it flashing it don't if you do, in order to have it stop again, I need to re-tick "run audio engine when stopped", then untick it again.
- Tracktion never releases my driver. This goes for all output, regadless of whether they are enabled or not, regardless of whether the engine is running or not, regardless of whether "stop all playback when application is minimized" is ticked or not. If Tracktion is running, then no other application can use any of my output channels. This all regardless of whether Tracktion uses ASIO or Windows Audio.
- sometimes after recording and disarming the track, the input-monitoring keeps being active I have to re-arm and then disarm the track again.
- on one occassion Superior Drummer (3) would keep telling my that the host's engine wasn't running, even though Tracktion was playing back just fine (SD aside of course). And no matter what I tried (safe from exiting Tracktion) it just wouldn't let me persuade itself otherwise. I actually had to re-load the plugin. I hasten to add that I have been using SD for many years in any number of hosts and have never experienced such a problem even once. (When it reports the engine as inactive, it really is.)
And I just started using Tracktion again.
- and then there's the Melodyne crashing thing of course, which I just filed the bug report about
Is the engine running smoothly for others without any such issues?

I'm not using all the same features and functions as you, Jens, but so far so good for me. Win 11. Latest Waveform version.
Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and even Deezer, whatever the hell Deezer is.

Can you for instance watch Youtube-videos while Tracktion is running in the background (Using the same audio-interface)?

That's interesting - is it the same channels which Tracktion releases when it's sitting idle in the background or channels that are deactivated in Tracktion?

Strange - right now it works using Windows Audio... edit: nope, I made a mistake it wasn't actually running in Tracktion - still doesn't get releasedjens wrote: Thu Jan 08, 2026 3:53 pm This all regardless of whether Tracktion uses ASIO or Windows Audio.
(i.e. I'm talking about the exclusive mode of course, which can't be shared but just released)

I usually always have it running so I had to check this out. Yes I'm seeing exactly as you describe here. When the panic symbol is flashing Serum2 will tell me that the daw has suspended processing (and there's no sound). Interestingly if I click on a track input while the panic button is flashing I have no audio or midi inputs showing. Then if I click to reset the 'panic' everything resets to normal but the engine runs constantly, ignoring the selection in Settings.jens wrote: Thu Jan 08, 2026 3:53 pm

The other stuff though.....nah, (Presonus Studio 24c) can be playing a project in Waveform, listeningto Youtube, recording the Youtube output through loopback into a track in Waveform, and recording from my mic onto a second track...and capture all of that into OBS (also using loopback.)
edit: Windows 11, all updates, Waveform latest version

Hm... I wonder what could make the difference here that it's not releasing the outputs.
So also when it's running it doesn't grab all output channels but rather just the ones you enabled in Tracktion?
