Monitor Speakers recomendations anyone

I went to our nearest Computer music store (Leeds,UK) to check out some active speakers for my setup and the only ones they had on offer were some Wharfdales at £200. Maybe its because Wharfdale reminds me of those wooly sounding speakers they made in the 70s or what but I didn't want to spend that ammount only to discover something better for less.
Now for you more pro guys £200 may not be anywhere enough to pay but for a home tinkerer like me its plenty so what are your recomendations?

The Wharfdales were also rather on the large size which steals all my work area so some smaller ones would be more useful.

Check out the FM blind test of about 12 monitors (last months of 2004).

The Yamaha MSP3 came out on top in the cheaper dept.

hi dave

i've yammy's mps5 and like them (they're quite small). I am no expert though.

Lots of people suggest m-audio monitors, too (on the cheap side). and even behringer truth (these are a bit more expensive).

I recomend the Tapco S5's, but then I would, wouldn't I.

But they really do sound great for the price. Lots more bottom end then other speakers of their size and still a very nice top end. Not sure what they cost in Pounds though.

Alesis M1 mk2 passive - not spectacular but professional and they don't cause too much ear-fatigue
and besides they are ridiculously cheap... :D

I recently got some Edirol MA-10A Micro Monitors. They were cheap and not what you would call pro speakers, but not bad if you have a premium on space. I'm a home tinkerer too, so I didn't need expensive nearfield monitors or anything. These sound good and do me just fine and they have multiple inputs so you can even use them as a standalone amp for equipment.

Check them out here:

I really like my Event TR-5s. They are biamped so you don't need a seperate amp to power them. They sound great. http://www.event1.com/Products/TR_Serie ... erence.htm

Another vote for MSP5 Yamahas here - I listened to quite a few, but knew instantly they were the ones for me

another vote for the events... for the money they are great little monitors (though I'm thinking about retiring my 10 year old 20/20s for a set of Mackie 624s)
Someone shot the food. Remember: don't shoot food!

HI

I recently bought a pair of Fostex PM0.5, they are nice and compact yet kick out a nice sound - I think they are highly recommended by many stores - I am certainly happy with them.

Flipper.
