Hi Gang :)

Well I tend to look at the Software packages as a whole, and sadly the quality Steinberg are putting out lately is so poor it makes me wonder where the company is going, lets hope it improves with the Yammy take over.

This is the first time I’ve not upgraded Cubase in the 12 or so years I’ve been using it, I thought SX 1 was a mistake so I give Steiny the benefit of doubt and upgraded to SX2 and its not until 2.2 its been much use to me.
It seems SX3 is another Buggy release so nothing has changed.

After being let down twice I decided to look at Sonar and thought I would give it a try starting with XL 2.2 then Pro3 and have upgraded to Pro4, I must say I was, and still am impressed with the stability and power of Sonar.
Its such a refreshing change to look at the feature set, and get it working like it should.

These feature lists are all well and good in Cubase and some look really impressive, but in my experience some of the features just don’t work like they should, and all that talk about Sonar not being any good with VST Plugin’s is just a joke I’ve had more problems with VST Plugin’s in SX, and would you believe some of those plugin’s were made by Steinberg.

I really like some of the features in SX (the ones that work) and hope in the near future Steiny get there act together, we need good competition to push development that benefits us all.

Why are people comparing Nuendo and Sonar.

Nuendo is Cubase with a batch of extra features for film editing. It's more than just surroundsound.

Though according to Steinberg both programs have the SAME audio engine.

Sonar vs. Cubase does make sense. They are both designed to do very similar things.

Nuendo of course is packed with more features and better implimentation of those features than Sonar ever will be. Since Sonar is NOT supposed to be used like that. You can do some basic video stuff in Sonar, but it's video editing is a basic feature. It's not meant to be the ultimate video editing product. (THAT'S STRAIGHT FROM CAKEWALK)

just to clarify for lorez

in sx 3 there is full surround buses etc - stopped using sx 2 the moment i got it so my bad for not realising it was only in that - surround panner automatically added to any channel sent to a 5.1 bus

so why do you need a 5.1 fx - i still dont get your point - an aux send in stereo also has a surround panner so why any fx across the full 5.1 apart from mastering/reverb ? we will just agree to differ

as for supporting dts and ac 3- let's be clear only a marketing department would describe outputting several mono wavs as supporting these formats

a plug-in in the host (ie nuendo) means one file - one place if changes are needed - one archive - trust me this is not supposed to be an attack on sonar i just don't think it is really that close to nuendo for people who are working with film - hell how usefull are the database features allowing multiple people to work on the same files at the same time - not for me but i dont work to a deadline or have a budget of 10's of 000's in order to finish it

now if i wanted to da a little project for someones dvd do i really need 10.2 ?

please be clear i suspect sonar is probably marginally better for surround sound than cubase - but really it is no match for nuendo - but for the money would be the cost effective option if you wanted surround - but surround and cost effective option doesnt quite sound right to me !

PS sx 3.01 is working very well - considerably better than sx 2 (although ive heard of some score bugs - which frankly should be an option that i dont have to install)

ericj23,

regarding surround specifically, I think a number of reviewers may refute that point.

The other post-processes of which you speak, are UNQUESTIONABLY in Nuendos favor.
If it sounds good it is good.

As I mentioned before, Steinberg have an official support forum for registered users. Cubase Version 3.1 is very good and has very few bugs. Id love to know how many people with Cubase have posted their so called "bugs" on the forum only to find out its something they are doing wrong or its a problem with their configuration :)
