Buy spike now or wait until it comes with T2?

I'm just going to throw this out here..I'm wanting to buy Spike for use with my powerbook, but it currently comes with T1. As a current owner of T1 I'm willing to pay for the T2 upgrade when it becomes available, as it looks really great. If I buy Spike now, will I still have to pay for the T2 upgrade, or should I wait until Spike comes with T2, and I won't have to pay for the upgrade? Additionally, does anyone know/think Spike will ever evolve to firewire? I like the package of software that comes with Spike. I'm just a little concerned about using usb 1.1. because of its' limited bandwidth. Your thoughts?.... Thanks

Maybe Beno can really answer these but my advice would be wait a couple of weeks if you can...
My GUESS is that if Spike were to go firewire or USB2 it would really be a different product with a new price, features and/or software bundle...

I your case, I would say wait until Namm, since we're so close to it. I'm sure if you buy the Spike after T2 is announced you wont have to pay for the upgrade. Unless Mackie decides to just ship T1 with spike forever (which I very much doubt).
As far as firewire, I dont know. I believe the spike is USB 2.0 so it should give you a little better throughput than 1.1.

Thank you both for your input. It's been a tough decision as to which sound
card to buy. There are firewire interfaces out there, but they don't come with
the great software package that comes with the XD-2.

I've been planning on getting a Layla 3G card (comes with Tracktion as well), but I'm going to hold out until T2 is released so I can avoid the upgrade charge.
Of course, if Echo Audio are slow to include T2, I may have to go ahead and update beforehand. I don't think I could stand the thought that some of those cool new features are available, and I don't have them yet

You know the Audiophile? It comes with Live Delta and Reason Adapted....
When Live 4 came out, and Reason 3... (is it out yet?)... I don't imagine the software in the Audiphile's box got upgraded.
Same with the MBox and Pro Tools LE. When's the last time LE was updated?
In other words-- I'm not saying it'll never happen, but because of marketing and vending logistics, I wouldn't count on getting T2 right "out of the box" on the eve of its release announcement. You might still be waiting a very long (indeterminable, even!) time.

But Tracktion is also a downloadable product. So I'm sure it would entitle you to update the software instantly. Reason adapted is a cut down version of the original, so is Live Delta. T was the full version. Well it shouldnt be too much longer before T2 is out and you find out for sure.Lunch Money wrote:

I agree that they're not quite the same thing. I guess it'll depend on Mackie's and Raw Materials' stance on it. T1 owners will have to pay for an upgrade to T2, so people who buy the version of Spike with T1 will technically be T1 owners. I could understand Mackie letting Spike owners get a free upgrade, but I could also see their point if they decided NOT to offer it... because that would mean that ALL Spike owners would be entitled to a free T2.
You can see how it's a bit of a slippery slope.
When I bought my Audiophile, it didn't actually come with Reason Adapted. Do you think M-Audio will let me download it for free? I've never asked.

Not really, if you bought a Spike when T1 was available then you have to pay for the upgrade to the new version. But if you buy a Spike when T2 is released, then you should be entitled to the new version. Companies dont usually sell old version of their software. Stores have overstock of them, but you couldnt buy Cubase 5.0 from steinberg after SX came out.Lunch Money wrote:

I still maintain that Mackie would be under no obligation to offer a free upgrade of free software that was licensed from a 3rd party.
However, IF they wrote back with their official response being that any Spikes sold after a certain date entitle the buyer to a free upgrade, then you're right that there'd be no more slippery slope, because that base would be clear and covered.
