mholloway wrote: Thu Jan 15, 2026 6:42 pm Legit surprised that Bitwig has the edge over Ableton in this poll, 164 > 160. That's fascinating, and even if KVR is just a small sample of users, pretty damned impressive for Bitwig.
Their official forum is here. Ableton's is elsewhere.

(Also some people hate polls and always put bullshit answers. (I chose ACID Pro - Never clapped eyes on it!))
Also forums are heavily geared towards old sods. Reaper scores high with the over 40 crowd.

In general though it is cool to see the two open format CLAP and DAWProject capable DAWs scoring high on a plugin crazy site like KVR.

Or Photoshop. There are alternatives (GIMP is actually very good) but when you are doing work for other people, you generally need to use the industry-standard tools, in much the same way as my bandmate finds it necessary to have Cubase for his other collaborations.
In my case I could get away with it, if I wanted to use Reaper or Bitwig, and only likely less than 1/4 of the plugins I own that would work well as Windows plugins in a wrapper, or have a native version.
That's the other issue, you deprive yourself of the incredible range of options we have today, for no benefit at all.

What a load of bollocks. I don't ever think about Windows, it stays 100% out of the way when I am working. If you don't like Windows Explorer, or you need more functionality, you can use any third party file manager you like, you can use third party window managers if you don't like the way Windows does that stuff, etc., etc., etc. In the old days I used to go in for a lot of that stuff - I used ACDSee for years and I made a few cool desktops in Rainmeter - but Windows 8/10 absolutely nailed it for me and I stopped bothering with any of it, which has made my life a helluva lot easier. Linux is just a giant PITA, too many compromises for absolutely zero benefit.

If you don't know, you don't know.
Just because you're oblivious to the P doesn't mean it isn't still ITA.

I think the benefit is obvious. Linux isn't tied to anything devious. You don't see Linus giving Trump a gold penguin statue so he will not tariff his needed imports like Tim Apple did, and Linus never backed George Bush jr. in the 2000 elections like Gates did that led to Iraq being decimated for little or no reason. Linux is relatively guilt free.

Like you though the trade off is all this super complex software I own that will never be Linux native, so why bother when pretty much everything we do is tied to psychopaths that have only their own interests in mind? I mean Samsung and LG are the products of the S Korean governments fascist (literally not a figure of speech), intervention to create market share, and of course everything is made in China...

I really like my experience with Studio Pro 8 and I believe I'm sticking with it at least for the next few years :) It is so easy to translate what's in my mind into the arrangement.

I compared with Live (my other favourite DAW) by trying to duplicate my song there and while it is a pleasant DAW and can be a linear DAW with the arrangement view, I still need to try many times or seeking help to accomplish the same results like in FSP8 (Fender Studio Pro 8 :D ). The reason is mostly that I started and spend most of the years with Cubase, so it is naturally I find FSP8 with smoother workflow than Ableton Live.
Using: Cubase Pro 15, Reason 13, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.

No scrolling, no dragging, no menus, no typing in search boxes. You guys don't know what you're waffling about. Gotta laugh at all these ignorant chumps who've hardly used it saying how crap it is.

Stock.
I started on Logic 5 with a PowerBook G4 550Mhz. I now have a MacBook Air M1 and it's ~165x faster! So, why is my music not proportionally better? :(

Hey, guys..

I have posted about MuLab, and am going to repeat.

I am not a "shill", and KVR citizens like to call each other "shills".

Like they are promoting some company, for some gain. Not me!

For about a hundred bucks, man you can get a nice DAW, holy shit, I mean it is basically fully modular, blend your VST stuff with MuLab stuff,

It is F**k*ng of the charts, got it? But it does NOT come with big sample library. Nope. No, not much!

Post

I've looked at MuLab a few times and I wouldn't even consider it. Any application that purports to be for music production and doesn't show a screenshot that includes the mixer is immediately suspect to me. Even when I searched for screenshots, only about 1 in 20 showed the mixer. When I found one that did, I understood why you wouldn't show it, it looks ugly and appears to be mostly useless.

Good onya, BONER!

MuLab is fully modular (see that window?) so each mixer rack can be customised with any number of slots that can be routed anywhere, and each rack can add a front panel that includes macros for any plugin, like Live. And you can customise the colours, knobs, etc.

I couldn't care less about an always visible mixer considering that I use it maybe 1% of the time dedicated to making a track. 99% of the time it is piano roll, devices and arrangement. And since Bitwig has an inspector I hardly use the mix view.

You can disappear the MuLab mixer, browser, session view or modular view with a click and just have the Composer (which is modular so you can have multiple).

I've never tried MuLab but it looks like an interesting daw. But I'm the guy that uses one daw exclusively and tries to learn it inside out instead of trying something else.

Reaper, it will last forever, to figure out all it does.
