Surely Bobby Soxers were the first teen hype?
Someone like Iannis Xenakis or the Radiophonic Workshop for using the studio as an instrument?
The Beatles didn't create Britpop

I thought this was funny…that is all

Wow, I didn't realize that The Time Machine was that old. I always think of The Machine Stops as the first prophetic story to warn us about giving up all agency, but that was first published in 1909 I believe. I kind of want to make a t-shirt now that says Morlock across the chest…but people would probably think it was some new A.I. startup.jancivil wrote: Thu Feb 05, 2026 4:08 pm (We were warned of the atrophy resulting from outsourcing all work way back in 1895, Wells' The Time Machine.)

I’m quite serious. Karaoke and DJs have had a significantly deleterious effect on the live music scene.

It probably won't happen if I did do it I would happily send you one for free.jancivil wrote: Thu Feb 05, 2026 7:09 pm I was tempted to interject 'consider me a Morlock' but chose to try and retain focus. I'd buy the t-shirt.

I only ever got involved in creating t-shirts when my fake country group's front man worked in a silkcreen shop, cost us nothing. we never even played out due to a freak injury I had but we sold t-shirts, they were pretty grand. classic cowboy/bronco bustin' drawing. With Mentors on the bill we were talking about a chicken-wire fence for the gig

nothing new will come from the ai itself, i agree, but from the pushback, maybe?Bombadil wrote: Thu Feb 05, 2026 3:24 pm AI is the biggest step BACKWARD in music history. Nothing new or innovative will ever come out of it. It’s de-evolution time for our species, and this is a symptom of a greater malaise.
I blame Karaoke, personally.
music is part of our genetic make up, as soon as babies can hold a shaker, you can see how much we love music.
it's only parents seeking quiet that kills the musician in every child imo, rather than encouraging them to make noise, and then organising it in to lessons as they become more able to retain the information.
people will always seek out music, enjoy making music, play live music...
ai will just be more of the music i tend to miss, radio friendly pop stuff... oh well.

I seem to have been encouaraged to make noise. I tried to make a drum kit out of pots and pans. Finally my father bought me a real kit, and a real good one at that.

I do hope that the AI de-evolution leads to less complacency amongst real music makers. The majority seem so content to color within the lines these days. Almost everything new I hear anymore I can say instantly that it sounds like this-or-that from 20, 30, 40… years ago. Maybe we'll find out that we've just gotten to the end of music? I don't think so though—I hope not. The dreaded word, genera—ewe gross.

it's not, it's just different than when we were young.
i try to be more encouraging to the local kids bands, go to the local social club if there's a gig on for example. stay positive, there's plenty of musicians out there still, there always will be.
can't say ive heard anything groundbreaking, but that was always a rare thing anyway, most new scenes that took the world by storm, were just new iterations of what had gone before, take grunge, it's rock with punk elements, nothing actually "new".
