That explains it. I have just checked, and the external drive is formatted "ntfs" (windows) which I guess is why no "right click Move to Bin" is possible. Before I can use it with my Mac Mini I need to clear it of years of files and re-format it, and I find working in either Win11 or Linux easier (at present) to accomplish that task.
You can get full OSX support for NTFS via third-party software, if that's any use to you.

I don't know how people can live without a reincarnation of the Norton Commander

Code: Select all

brew install double-commander
[F3] - view
[F6] - move
[F8] - delete
I installed double commander, and it allows me to move stuff, but it is not able to delete the item after moving it, I guess because of the ntfs formatted drive?

Thanks for that. Am I right in thinking that in the long run I would be better off having an nvme external drive in exFAT?

dellboy wrote: Thu Feb 05, 2026 10:36 am I recently bought an M4 Mac Mini and finding it great for Music work, but for everything else I go back to my win 11 machine. For instance, Mac OS has no "right click delete"? Whats that about? It makes doing any serious work with external SSD's very tiring, dragging each file to a bin on the taskbar.
Finder is the thing I really dread, when using a mac (also the non at-keyboard with extra meta/such keys). Ableton Live open? No problem :hihi:

The reason I am using this machine is because I had a strange file in Win 11 that stubbornly refused to delete. I Logged into Linux Mint, "right clicked delete", and the file is gone! This is where Linux shines. One of the main tools I have used in Linux over the years is "Gparted" partition manager, its free, and brilliant for disk management.
You have Defender on in the installation of Win11? Thats usually the problem, I do not install it anymore, machine really flies without any shitscanner :o
Anyway, if there is no program, OS or scanner holding the file hostage, and you can r/w a filesystem, of course one can do almost everything with it :)

The stubborn Win 11 files were put there by Bitwig 5 beta. As far as I am aware there was no known way to delete them from within the Win 11 system. In the latest Bitwig 6 beta they changed the way of doing things. Linux was made for solving problems like this.

exFAT is what I'd use for anything that gets used across different OS platforms. if you're not doing that, then the native OS format is fine, IMO.

macmoffatt wrote: Thu Feb 05, 2026 1:00 pm(NTFS) as far as I can remember is read only for MacOS
That's correct. There was a terminal command to force-enable write, but I'm not sure if it still works and I wouldn't recommend it anyway. There are various other ways to add NTFS write support, though the only one I have personal experience with is Paragon Software’s NTFS For Mac (which is £25 and works really well.. ). Otherwise it's best to format as ex-FAT to use a drive cross-platform.

Re Other stuff - “Move to Bin” is context aware, meaning it won’t appear on folders like "System" or "User" in Finder, because it doesn’t think it’s a good idea to let you delete those folders easily :D

There’s also multiple ways to customise what happens when right-clicking on MacOS. By default you can control some context menu stuff (Keyboard / Keyboard Shortcuts / Services, and General / Login Items & Extensions / Extensions) etc. If you want more custom stuff then there’s scripting, or using the Automator app to do the same, as well as a bunch of 3rd party context menu utility add-on apps etc..

But it’s often quicker to learn / assign relevant keyboard shortcuts to do stuff.

Learned the hard way: each thumb drive has its own recycle bin on MacOs.
You can move it there, but it won't free up any space.

No. That's not reality. Sheesh.

I wish I was important enough to have goons. I was watching this thread and couple others here others for any MIDI issues in our recent rollout. ASIO and MIDI both came up in this topic, as I recall.

The future of Windows is data mining for AI. Everything you do inside (and outside) of your DAW will be send to data centers for processing. This will make Windows unattractive for professionals who make a living from sound in any way but that's a small group Microsoft can afford to lose.

Linux now has native NTFS support, courtesy of the same company. Open source, of course. ;)
