Much of it is. But that doesn't mean that we want it. The new gen of customers might already be normalized to subscriptions and other shenanigans, coming up in a psycho economy when people can't afford to buy houses anymore, but previous gens still understand that everything as a subscription is a renter mentality that makes you broke paying the forever rent, leaving you with nothing when you don't pay it.Grizzellda wrote: Wed Feb 04, 2026 6:38 am I think the basic idea here, is just subscribe and get it all, keep it simple, fresh updates...
It is all moving in this direction, can not you see it guys?

Yeah it needs a better way to handle and import loops. This is no good in Reason i think compared to say Ableton.

You know, this type of convo we are having here, on KVR, is probably (prolly, as I like to say), indicative of other stuff going on in our in society...like companies buying other companies, absorbing "meta information"...more and even more... useless information, or data.
Who will be left standing at the end, and...will it even matter?

So what you guys are saying, that if you subscribe, you are simply renting...but I am saying that is frankly how alot of society works nowadays!
You may be renting your residence, electricity and water. Also
smartphone, internet...Netflix streaming services...prolly more.
Yeah..and water.
And you are paranoid about not owning an audio plugin???
"Laugh Out Loud" as they say on the web!

Services such as water and electricity are metered and you pay for exactly what you use.
Netflix and some other services are not metered and have a fixed price.
None of these services can be bought outright, unless you are a billionaire and buy the company, so they aren't comparable to renting.
Renting a plugin is more like renting a TV which used to be a thing in the 70s.
Now that TVs are more affordable and reliable, renting them is not mainstream.
I'd generally rather buy a plugin that I can sell later with only a small or no transfer fee if required, rather than subscribe.
Companies that are subscription only or don't allow license transfers at all or have onerous transfer policies are anti consumer.
I prefer to boycott them unless they are very inexpensive.

We are still renting almost everything thru sneaky taxes.
The difference today is that we have to buy it first and then we get the sneaky taxes/renting that follow the product we bought like Housing, Car, TV License and so on.
The Elite/State has given us a fake Illusion of ownership and when you look closer you realize that you actually own nothing.
I like to own a Software or a license to use it since i like to Take a Image Backup of my System with my plugins Installed on a separate Hdd as soon as everything is installed so it only takes me a few Minutes to get back to a clean pre-installed System if something goes wrong.

Good points, I am just accepting subscriptions personally. People can make up their own minds...the concept really does not bother me, the way the world is nowadays it makes sense.
And say you do "own the software"...what, pray tell... do ya actually own?
The plastic CD disc it comes on?
And by time you get it, it will need an update...from the internet!
WAKE UP!

Tax and rent are different things for starters.
I can lease a car and still need to pay road tax.
I can own a car and if I declare it as being ‘off road’ because I am not using it, I don’t need to pay road tax.
Trying to equate subscriptions, leasing, renting, service contracts and tax is futile.
Step away from the YouTube conspiracy theory videos maybe!

All I know is I don't use 80% of the stuff I 'own' anyway! I also have no problem subscribing, its actually quite cathartic just being bale to stop paying when you stop using stuff, instant de-clutter!
X32 Desk, i9 PC, S88MK3, S1, BWS, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6 Pro3, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone II, OP1-F, OPXY, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

Taxing a car or your house is extended renting of something you bought and both will be removed the day you stop paying.agharta wrote: Sun Feb 08, 2026 1:18 pmWhat are you on about?D-Fusion wrote: Sun Feb 08, 2026 12:56 pm We are still renting almost everything thru sneaky taxes.

So you don't own it. The State takes ownership of it as soon as you have bought it.

Road tax is based on actually using the roads, at least in the UK.D-Fusion wrote: Sun Feb 08, 2026 4:34 pm Taxing a car or your house is extended renting of something you bought and both will be removed the day you stop paying.
So you don't own it. The State does.
If you don't want to use the car on the road, you can declare that, take it off the road and don't pay tax.
So it is a service charge.
If the state owns my car, how come I can sell it and the state doesn't take a cut?
Many cars that are untaxed and used on the road illegally might also not have an MOT or be uninsured.
In this case, the state rightly frowns on such behaviour and can impound your car.
But if you pay any fine and sort out the paperwork, you can collect your car.
Are there too many taxes and does it hit the poor disproportionately?
Is capitalism as currently organised in the West often overrun by greedy sociopaths?
I understand people's frustrations, but stating that a service charge/tax is the same as rent is as useful as calling a dog a cat.
It doesn't help your case if you just make wild statements without explaining why they are valid.

Everytime they build a new tunnel or a road we get a check point that cost extra money everytime you pass it to pay down the changes they have done so the Road tax is not used for it at all in my Country.
There was a time when it was used for building Roads but they found a solution to bypass it in my country by setting up Paying check points to fund it all...So here we pay Road Tax and then we pay extra for every check point we pass along the way that they put up.

It's just part of the tax collection and the government generally do what they like unless it's ring fenced in some way.
But this is a tax issue and not about ownership or renting.
There are too many taxes and part of that is down to governments not wanting to increase the general rate of income tax, so they use stealth taxes instead.
The TV license in the UK might have made sense in the 40s and there was a radio license since the 1920s, but it seems an anachronism today.
Governments don't like to make difficult decisions so they blunder on.
The TV license is a bit like having a Kontakt version 37 that is 32 bit only.
