New thread dedicated to current major version.

Backdrop: Logic Pro has 20+ million users

New in Logic Pro 12
  • Subscription model (Creator Studio bundle) for $12.99/month or $129/year
  • Apple Silicon only (not compatible with Intel Mac)
  • Chord ID (AI) detection
  • Synth Session (AI) Player
  • Update to Sound Library (AI natural language search)
  • Step Sequencer tweaks
  • Match EQ tweak (set maximum boost/cut)
Bugs in Logic Pro 12
  • Opening application requires user to be online and logged into account (patched in 12.01)
  • Cannot open application if logged into different account than Apple ID used to purchase Logic Pro
  • Opening Logic Pro produces no audio output; requires closing application and re-opening
  • Sound Library installs massive content on internal hard drive, even if current version content library path is external hard drive
Common Criticisms of Logic Pro 12
  • Apple is gearing up for a full subscription-based platform
  • Very limited new features for a full version update
  • Leaves Intel Mac users behind
  • Ignores longstanding workflow improvements
  • Update focuses heavily on AI features targeting beginners and not professionals
  • Old plugins have been ignored for 20-30 years with no GUI refresh or improvements
  • Still no ARA support
  • Still no update to Browser, which significantly lags behind competitors
  • Audio stretching in Audio Editor is still a destructive process
  • Still no grid overlay in Audio Editor
  • Audio waveform rendering still has not been updated in over 30 years
  • Still cannot import AIFF files
  • Still can only output through a single stereo pair
  • Still can only import one movie file at a time
  • Pitch bend still displays confusing -8192 to 8192 values
  • Can only modulate plugin parameters on Software Instrument channels (as MIDI FX inserts). Audio and Auxiliary channel Audio FX plugins must have their own internal modulation system.
  • The Grid in the Tracks area and Piano Roll is still fixed to divisions based on manual configuration in settings, rather than dynamic based on Zoom, making it extremely cumbersome to align regions and notes.

Don't know where you got the information that Logic Pro 12 is not compatible with Intel Macs. There are a few features that don't work (Chromaglow, Stem Splitter) and the Mastering Assistant presets are gone. Otherwise LP 12 runs just fine on my 2017 Intel iMac Pro.

I think the subscription version might not be working on the Intel Macs.

Post

To be honest, as soon as M1 was announced back in 2021 I knew my intel machine’s days were numbered. So I am a bit surprised by current day Intel Mac users being so taken aback by the course of Apple of phasing out Intel support.

Logic 12 runs on intel machines. I run it on a Macbook pro (2019) and 15.7.4.

It's still weak sauce. They rushed it to meet some deadline for the sub model, I suspect. It really is 11.3.
And I'm not interested in the robo players. Stem splitter is cool.
It would be nice to find out they squashed all the bugs they said they did in the release notes. I somehow doubt it, given their history.
I haven't seen such a messy yet inconsequential update, yet. I'll wait until something relevant to me comes out.

It was an underwhelming update indeed. I’m rooting for better browser and scale overlays on piano roll for years. All the competition implemented it, but not Apple… :/

Post

I’m pleased that this update makes it really painless to relocate library content.

Misleading thread, please post official release notes rather than something like this if you are going to make a post

Sorry, this isn’t a press release. This is a discussion forum. Feel free to discuss.

You could've typed "Logic Pro X 12 release notes" into a search engine in the time it took to complain about someone's supremely innocuous post.

A question. can Logic 11.2.2 access the Logic Pro Library.bundle. Probably not - I haven't tried. I had both installed until ....................

worse still my iPad can no longer be used for Logic 12 Remote, so much for using older hardware.

I will stay with Sequoia and 11.2.2 for now

Post

Wise choice.

Thank you for doing the hard work for me

For now, but you already know that intel machines are being phased out of support. That path has been made clear as soon as M1 was presented.

Many of you have probably already come across this video in your YouTube feed. And probably very, very few of you will have the time or patience to watch someone talk for 30 minutes or so about their history with Logic Pro since the Emagic days. Regardless of your personal feelings for Christian Henson (I know he's divisive), he's undeniably a professional musician and composer and Logic Pro power user. So, the perspective he shares in the video is one that I think should carry some weight.
