Backdrop: Logic Pro has 20+ million users
New in Logic Pro 12
- Subscription model (Creator Studio bundle) for $12.99/month or $129/year
- Apple Silicon only (not compatible with Intel Mac)
- Chord ID (AI) detection
- Synth Session (AI) Player
- Update to Sound Library (AI natural language search)
- Step Sequencer tweaks
- Match EQ tweak (set maximum boost/cut)
- Opening application requires user to be online and logged into account (patched in 12.01)
- Cannot open application if logged into different account than Apple ID used to purchase Logic Pro
- Opening Logic Pro produces no audio output; requires closing application and re-opening
- Sound Library installs massive content on internal hard drive, even if current version content library path is external hard drive
- Apple is gearing up for a full subscription-based platform
- Very limited new features for a full version update
- Leaves Intel Mac users behind
- Ignores longstanding workflow improvements
- Update focuses heavily on AI features targeting beginners and not professionals
- Old plugins have been ignored for 20-30 years with no GUI refresh or improvements
- Still no ARA support
- Still no update to Browser, which significantly lags behind competitors
- Audio stretching in Audio Editor is still a destructive process
- Still no grid overlay in Audio Editor
- Audio waveform rendering still has not been updated in over 30 years
- Still cannot import AIFF files
- Still can only output through a single stereo pair
- Still can only import one movie file at a time
- Pitch bend still displays confusing -8192 to 8192 values
- Can only modulate plugin parameters on Software Instrument channels (as MIDI FX inserts). Audio and Auxiliary channel Audio FX plugins must have their own internal modulation system.
- The Grid in the Tracks area and Piano Roll is still fixed to divisions based on manual configuration in settings, rather than dynamic based on Zoom, making it extremely cumbersome to align regions and notes.
