This isn't art. It's a tool replicating an old tool.DrGonzo wrote: Thu Mar 05, 2026 4:54 am May I offer a complimentary view on this matter? As much as you are correct with the above statement, there is a critical omission that everybody seems to forget when talking about art and AI.
Why does the artist make art? Do you make art because of your audience or do you make it because it's a place you love to be in?
Watching ChatGTP making music gear related humorous Haikus is hilariously entertaining in the same way as it is entertaining to watch Pewdiepie play Minecraft.
Just focusing on the end result is missing the point of the artist making art. It's like, just because you can take the car to point B, and the world indeed doesn't care about how you got to point B. But you do. And isn't that the point of art? Or anything really?

You can be creative in any right place on Earth, and not only in the wealthiest cities. Bring the world feelings from everywhere, and not only feelings of capitalistic or jail environment.

I couldn't find the firmware distributed by Roland.. AI says it has been removed. (JP8000 OS is there though)rafa1981 wrote: Thu Mar 05, 2026 10:00 am ..
What is legal is different in each country.
Take for example the JP8080. The firmware is freely distributed by Roland themselves and there don't seem to be any written terms restricting its usage on an emulator or that you have to own the device to use the firmware. ....

The JP 8000 OS download does have this though:
and2.1. You must do the following:
A. Run the Software only on the hardware for which it was intended to operate, when applicable;
B. Use License Keys (if applicable) only from Roland or an authorized Roland License Key provider;
C. Treat the Software as Roland confidential information;
D. Use the Software only on as many computers or devices that You purchased, in such configurations permitted by Roland or Roland, as may be specified on Your Order....
rsp2.2. Except as otherwise permitted by this EULA or by mandatory law (meaning a law that the parties cannot change by contract), You must not, and must not allow Your Permitted Third Parties, to do the following:
A. Modify or remove any proprietary notices or markings on or in the Software;
B. Transfer License Keys to any other person or entity;
C. Download Updates from Roland or an authorized provider unless You have a valid support agreement;
D. Install Updates on Enterprise Products (e.g., server, networking, storage, integrated solutions, and data protection appliances) that have gone end of service life unless Roland otherwise agrees in writing;
E. Install and operate counterfeit versions of Software (i.e. software provided by anyone other than Roland or an authorized representative of Roland) on Roland hardware;

No, you are incorrect. There is however a forum exploring "how Machine Learning and AI can expand musical creativity while keeping the human in the creative workflow."
In case its not obvious to you, there's no definition for 'musical creativity' which includes 'reverse engineering a digital hardware device'.
So when did Ben make that rule, then?it is the ai-free effects forum here.

Every field sees automation coming sooner or later and AI is the automation of software development. Software developers not using it are leaving money on the table. The days of software fully coded by humans are as over as the days of software manually coded in assembly.
The discussion on how dependent we will be on it and if it's going to be used in a monopolistic way is an interesting one, but it's also off-topic.

That’s interesting, as it means Roland have recently updated their terms to specifically prevent this use.zvenx wrote: Thu Mar 05, 2026 11:02 am The JP 8000 OS download does have this though:

The terms I agreed to when I downloaded it a while ago had no such stipulations, and as long as I don’t download it again, I don’t feel I’m bound by these new use terms.
But certainly interesting them updating their terms finally to be more explicit about allowed usage.

And I assume you did read the terms before.. I, like most people, I imagine, rarely read the entire EULA's in detail, just quick glance, agree and on with my business.
But indeed TUS now at least explicitly says for the owners of the original hardware...
