But that there is the reason I have concerns about the copy protection. There is only one Patrick Kunz. Let's say (heaven forbid), that Patrick had something bad happen to him today. Again, it's a horrible thought, and I don't wish that on him at all--he's a great developer and I wish him only the greatest of success. That said however, how does his company continue? How do you get your authentications once the server goes down? I've been here at KVR long enough to see developers suddenly pass away (RIP). Several of them. Challenge / response or any vendor dependent copy protection will not save anyone in one of these cases. That's why I like how U-he and Plogue are doing things. You are SAFE from vendor dependent copy protection in those cases. It doesn't matter if they were to shut their business doors today--you'd still have access to your software you purchased. I just bought Zebra 3, and I have no fears of having this problem, because there is no problem to worry about--they don't use vendor dependent copy protection.SAGG wrote: Tue Mar 31, 2026 3:20 pmYeah, you wanna take that chance instead of Patrick? You're crafty with them "colour change" words, but a lot of jurisprudence and sneaky lawyer ways you don't actually understand, yet you speak out of your rear compartment anyway![]()
It was a fairly innocent "crime", yet they still gave Audiothing major shit for calling their synth "June" (and that story is still not over, AFAIK, even after the name change). But didn't give Arturia shit for calling their synth Jun-6 V. With Arturia Jupiter-8, yet they did force them to implement changes.
Truth is, we don't know how these guys operate and when they strike. They're probably checking all these companies out, looking if somebody will pay them off to bug off.
Only Patrick Kunz is in the right to decide whether he wants to take that chance. I'm only saying I wouldn't risk it. It's really not worth it.

If the server no longer functions your plugin will.
If it can't make a connection to the server, it ignores it and continues working as before. (your plugin that is)

Software that requires internet access for activation is not possible to set up on an airgapped studio machine. Always-online software is not possible to use on such machines, at all.
TAL gained a following among people who maintain airgapped studio setups (or just use laptops while traveling). Many of these customers were upset by the change, especially because it wasn't announced.

This is nice, if true. But it doesn't add up. Why connect to the server at all, if you aren't authenticating--which we were told it does. This response just doesn't make sense. I really want to believe it, but this leaves a lot of questions in the air.zvenx wrote: Tue Mar 31, 2026 3:52 pm I contacted Patick about the concern about registration etc.
he has amended the FAQ:
Hopefully this quells any concerns. The plug-in will ask for your license key when you open the user interface. Registration and use of the plug-ins are possible even if the TAL server is unavailable or you are offline.
From time to time the plug-ins connect to the server to verify the license and register the device, if necessary. If the server cannot be reached, nothing happens. This means you can continue using the plug-ins even in the future, whether or not the TAL server still exists.
The license can be registered on up to four different computers. You can remove registered computers at any time by logging into your account.

You say yourself that you can remove the registered computers at any time by logging into your account (which is nice). But that means that if you don't, you are being blocked somehow. Otherwise why the need to remove the registered computers. The answer just doesn't add up. There's more to this than we are told. I like Patrick Kunz and I LOVE his products (I bought several before the copy protection change). But the answer given just doesn't add up.zvenx wrote: Tue Mar 31, 2026 3:52 pm I contacted Patick about the concern about registration etc.

So, the bad part of the story is it does phone home. The good part is it doesn’t do anything if it cannot reach the server.
Still 1000x better than RCM, maybe I can just block it in my firewall…

And if I decided to send my serial authorisations to 50 of my friends and say come use Tal stuff for free...
My friends would always have to remain offline for that to work.
Or what happens if some unscrupulous shady seller, decides to buy one license and sell it 90 times to different people unknown the buyers?

You said you just bought a JX-8P emulator, but your links are only for a couple half-assed free ones that are obsolete, unusable and useless to most people. A VCVrack version made from assembling standard modules? I’m sure you could also dig up a Reaktor user module too.wagtunes wrote: Tue Mar 31, 2026 5:05 pmWe're talking about these, right?jamcat wrote: Tue Mar 31, 2026 4:34 pmYou seem to be confused about what this is a model of.wagtunes wrote: Tue Mar 31, 2026 4:27 pm Are we talking about the same synth? Then you have u-he Diva, which can sound just like it and arturia's Jupiter 8 V, which is close enough.
So how many more do we need? It's not like the 8X P is the most amazing synth on the planet. And for $55, what I have currently are more than adequate substitutes.
Neither Diva nor any Jupiter model sounds like a JX-8P. You will not get the JX-8P string sound from anything else. If you’re just looking for a “close enough” synth then any analogue synth model is “close enough” to any other analogue synth model, if you don’t have standards.
So you probably do not and never have required the very specific and recognizable sound of the JX-8P strings or brass. In that case, perhaps a true and proper JX-8P model isn’t anything special to you.
But, the JX-8P is “the most amazing synth on the planet” for synth strings.

Here's what's officially posted:
This is different than what was previously posted about the challenge response copy protection he was using. Did he change it? If so, I'm going to be really happy. But I want to be sure. (I will admit that it looks like he might have, so if it's true, it will be good news and I will start buying again). How does our registration process work?
