If you like specific drums from the 80s then maybe you could sample some of those sounds and manipulate them.
One of the best purchases I made in recent years is Visco:
https://forever89.studio/
You can load samples and it will resynthesize them and let you manipulate them. The possibilities with this are endless.

Aly James SY-4X Syncussion seems cool but there doesn't seem to be a demo:

I ended up picking VSDSX, Ephemere, Microtonic... If I could, I'd have picked up quite a few more, but I've been taking it easy lately, because the last time I loaded my DAW with plugins, I ended up not using everything.
Thanks, everyone.

you could try mine, there are you standard 808 and 909 sounds, and you can manipulate them further with the bitcrusher, filters, distortions etc.. I'll add some more 80's synth stuff later.

Paul’s Beatforge is definitely worth checking out. It has around 20 synth engines that sound great and are highly tunable, plus samples, slicing, P-Locks, and other Elektron-style features.Paul_Pulsonix wrote: Sat Jun 13, 2026 9:48 am you could try mine, there are you standard 808 and 909 sounds, and you can manipulate them further with the bitcrusher, filters, distortions etc.. I've been using Microtonic lately, and I'm really enjoying the sound quality. However, there's one thing that's slowing down my workflow: as far as I can tell, there's no obvious way to simply click on a drum channel (kick, snare, hi-hat, etc.) and audition that individual sound instantly while trying to create a beat... or am I missing something?ThoughtExperiment wrote: Fri Jun 12, 2026 10:38 am Sonic Charge Microtonic is pretty old now, but it's still unbeatable for synthetic drums. There's even a bank of simulated classic drum machines included. Certainly worth checking out IMO.
I use FL Studio, and the only way I`ve found out to hear the sounds so far is by pressing its Play buttom (which plays drumbeats in loop) or through the Piano roll.

I've been tempted to get this one - based on the Pearl Syncussion SY-1 percussion synth from 1979: https://ghostnoteaudio.uk/products/syncourse

The drums are mapped from C1 up to G1, so if FL gives you a keyboard 'keyboard' you can use that or a MIDI keyboard. You can also just press the buttons at the top which say "1 c", 2 c#" to preview the sounds.james_laverc wrote: Tue Jun 30, 2026 11:16 amI've been using Microtonic lately, and I'm really enjoying the sound quality. Another vote for Full Bucket minipops.
Also Audiothing SR-88
Alyjames does an SY-1 too..
There's a cool Syndrum module (and lots of other drum modules) in Voltage Modular too if you have that.
(The Syndrum module is designed by the designer of the original Syndrum hardware too.)

Arturo’s still sells Spark 2 software which has dozens of presets that cover an enormous amount of 80’s drum machines faithfully.
Worth looking into as many were synthesized as opposed to sampled (ie: Linn 9000).

It's a great concept. I wish they'd used their own frequency matching software to make it sound more like the hardware.mcbpete wrote: Tue Jun 30, 2026 11:32 am I've been tempted to get this one - based on the Pearl Syncussion SY-1 percussion synth from 1979: https://ghostnoteaudio.uk/products/syncourse
