Tracktion Software

Okay, so... here's the question no one's asked yet:

T2 is going to be a boxed product, it would seem. So what does that mean as far as activation goes? Will we be able to install Tracktion right out of the box without any intrusive copy protection, like Sonar? Will the program need an internet connection to be activated, or (shudder) a dongle? Or will it remain as it is now with T1?

I really hope that the activation has been removed, and that we can install the program simply, like Sonar. This, to me, is Sonar's biggest strength, and it's the only drawback of Tracktion.

I'll settle for the current scheme of taking a code and pasting it into Mackie's website to get the activation key. At least it gives me control over the license.

However, if the machine needs a direct internet connection for activation (like, say, Windows XP), or a USB dongle, then I'll seriously have to rethink purchasing T2.

Didn't Beno say a while back that it was the same as V1?

Sonar has intrusive copy protection? Since when? You type in your serial # and that's it. Or wait, you mean without that... like Sonar. Nevermind!

I'm fond of Tracktion's current scheme, but I guess if it was a stormy night and my internet was down and I really needed a new code, I'd be frustrated.

Or something.

Beno said it is "identical" copy protection to T1.

I'm not sure if T2 is only in a box - has that been clarified?

Well, if it's identical, that's acceptable to me. Tracktion's challenge/response copy protection is better than most, since it allows me control over the machine(s) my license is attached to.

Still, I prefer Sonar's method, because it doesn't treat me like a potential criminal, and allows me the freedom to use unhindered what I paid for.

That I am willing to buy Tractkion, and T2, speaks very highly of the software itself, because I've refused to buy other software with intrusive copy protection. That's already a difficult road to hoe, because I make it a point to pay for the software that I use. I just don't like to be penalized for it in the form of dongles and cd checks.

Since you mention appreciating that "it allows me control over the machine(s) my license is attached to", I wonder if you know this: can I move a tracktion license to and from a PC from a Mac? I'm not talking about concurrent use on both -- only one machine at a time.

Y'see, I have a Mac that is my main music machine, but also a PC that I could use for music in a pinch. I'm new to all this, a guitar synthesist wanting to record audio, input & sequence midi, and edit midi. I've been evaluating Reason, FruityLoops and, since discovering it this week, tracktion 1.

It looks to me like I must choose between Mac and PC when I buy a tracktion license. Reason offers me installers for either one; Fruityloops is Windows only. I'm leaning away from Fruityloops because I really prefer something that I can use on my Mac. But, being spoiled by the flexibility that other software vendors offer [like Propellerheads or Hash, Inc.'s Animation:Master], I am looking for the product that will let me move to the PC when I need it. I don't mind de-authorizing the Mac in order to use the PC; I don't need both at once. I just need to know whether tracktion can be moved back and forth, mac to pc, because that will probably be the biggest influence on my purchasing decision. Does anyone here know?

You might as well be, 'cos the license allows it.

Tracktion gives you TWO machine numbers, so you can have Tracktion concurrently installed on any two computers of your choice.

Like, folks, I think we have a winner. I'm diggin the ease of MIDI editing in the sequencer already [not too thrilled with the fact that the demo keeps putting a Program Change in every new track]. Haven't even tried it on my PC yet. Thanks for the reply, valley!

ensure you don;t have a program selected for your MIDI input device.

Program changes only get inserted when you insert them, but it isn't always necessary for you to *know* that you are inserting them.
