How can I turn on track numbering?

The manual says that there should be automatic track numbering and I can not find how to turn it on. As I use an external controller for mixing I have to do manual counting of the track number all the time to find the connected fader. It is incredibly annoying and all other DAW:s that I have used have this feature.

3.2.4. Track Names
You may have noticed that when a track is created, it is automatically
given a name to reflect the type of track it is and its track number.
And when a track is moved around, the track number in its name is
dynamically updated. By default, tracks are set to automatically name
themselves based on certain factors. If you desire, you can override this
functionality by renaming the track.
To rename a track: right-click the track's header and then choose
Rename from the context menu.

When you first add a track it gets a number, such as inst1 or inst2, fx1, fx2, etc. The name itself is that until you change it or add something to it. Once you add something to it, it inherits the name of the item added.

yes this is so annoying, why does it autoname the Bitwig created names but not vst etc? e.g. i add Serum 2, duplicate it, and it names it Serum 2, so you got 10x Serum 2..... why not an option to add e.g. #2, #3, #4 etc. if you rename them then you do it anyway and for people who are exhausted by renaming add this option maybe?

Why would you need that in Bitwig?
I understand that in FLS but in Bitwig they are either living on different tracks or they are inside of Layers in container...
Imho very easy to distinguish between the seperate instances...

Studio One always did what you described... copied effects and instruments got a silly auto-numbering (but just for 3rd party stuff, native ones didn´t do it) and I hated that completely as it doesn´t make any sense imho...

I personally don´t want at all any auto-numbering at all... I don´t even want any auto-naming... I wouldn´t leave track names with that auto-name anyway...
Who names his tracks this way: Serum #2, Serum#3 etc...?

In a perfect world Bitwig would put a number BEFORE the name that updates dynamically when tracks are removed/moved...

thanks, well i see it like that.

1. give an option to users to switch autonaming so if one doesnt care the option can be ignored.

2. i dont name every project like guitars, guitar sub, group guitars, this and that and that and this, so seeing something like #2 #3 #4 etc. still is better than Serum 2 Serum 2 Serum 2 Serum 2....

3. even a 01. Serum 2, 02. Serum 2, 03. Clap Hard, 04. Kick etc. would be more helpful.

also the logic is just isnt there. why it Bitwig numbering its template names but not when you edit the name? so a numbering system is there, just not consistenly.

a demonstration, then what annoys me, you see that the inst 2 etc. is greyed out so you cannot use these names, and if you name them manually like Instrument 2 and then add Serum it doesnt get named Serum, so then I would just load and not use the replace function. i find the Bitwig way inconsisten, Ableton manages it much better and logical.

Same for me...

I've never named tracks by what plugin or device is on the track. I name tracks according to the role they play in the composition.
