I was there when Racks were released and they've proved to be a real differentiator to other sw sequencers. At the time, we pondered how cool it would be if we could easily swap our best racks amongst the Tracktion family.

Unfortunately, I don't see any mention of this Rack Import/Export function in T2????

It's already possible to swap racks in T1. ;-)

Yes, copy & paste of the XML-code in the edits! Nice one - and very user-friendly...

nope - save a rack preset, open it in an empty edit (song), save this edit and voilà...

Hey, good point, didn't think of that.

yeah, i wrote a whole XML handling class to manipulate the tracktionsettings file with the aim of extracting the rack presets data, and was halfway thru writing a program that allows the presets to be exported/imported directly from/to the preset file. it was a bit of a nightmare but it proved that it was workable, and part of it involved maintaining a database of plugins used (including where they were available from, freeware/commercial etc..) but then i realised that you can just save an edit with the preset in and transfer it like that! talk about too much effort!

at least i got an XML class out of it. oh no, hold on, jules released JUCE which has a better one that i can use! dOH!! ;)

yeah you can just save an edit with a rackfilter in, the advantage of that is that you can set up the rackfilter as you would have it used in a project so that the recipient can see how to connect it up. this may not sound entirely useful, but if you consider that you can route multiple tracks into a single rackfilter, you can demonstrate how to set them up.

Also, you can put blank midi clips down on the tracks and use their clip name fields to write little messages/notes on how to use it, i.e. "Put drum sounds on this track", "This track is just for the midi data to control the synth", "The level of this track controls the depth of the modulation" etc...

you can fit a surprising amount of text into that field!
Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

this would be a handy tool still :o

well now that T2 is almost upon us i think i'll wait to see what rack stuff is implemented there before i bugger around with it any more, plus i'm so busy with uni stuff and exams at the moment.

still, i think that with complex rack filters you really need to explain how to set them up on your tracks for them to be any use, and i think it's much easier to do that by example than description, and i can't really imagine it being worthwhile finishing this program because, at the end of the day, it'll be a separate program to handle it... Tracktion is perfectly capable of creating a single edit archive with the presets in and exporting that. that way the recipient can load it up, try it out and decide whether or not to save it in their presets.. and to do so only involves a click or two directly from the rackfilter itself...

i hope at least that these examples are useful to someone? :)

and that way you can even export/import multiple rack presets in one go. :-D

d'oh that was supposed to be in there too! not sure why it didn't trot out of my brain, down my neck, along my arms and fling off my fingers into the text tho...

thanks for pointing it out for me jens ;) :hihi:
