It was preformatted. It is indeed FAT32.

going to read the help file.

Thanks for your input guys. I really do appreciate it.

It's risk free right? I mean, I don't risk loosing any data? I have newer programs.. I just don't want to lose my samples, libraries, etc.. The help file says I won't lose anything but I am still wary..

I'd back it up anyway if you have the means. Better safe than sorry.

In addition, please let us all know if it does indeed solve the problem. If so, I may decide to convert my FAT32 partition (containing ONLY Sampletank sounds) to NTFS.

Good luck,
Randy

I am not sure I am going to do it.. I can't back it all up.. whichever one of us has the balls to do it first lets the other know if it worked. :)

balls balls said the Queen ...
if I had two I'd be King!

I would strongly suggest backing it up as well before reformatting as NTFS ... you never know!

I got an idea ... let's give it to Mikey, he'll repartition anything!

Good luck and let everyone know how it turns out. All my partitions are already NTFS and it does sound like FAT32 may be the culprit. Keep us posted!

I did a bit more research on converting from Fat32 to NTFS and apparently there is a known issue/bug. Apparently a bug that makes bigger clusters ( no idea what all this tech talk is about ) but apprently, you do have to completely reformat to NTSF to have it work properly. If you simply convert Fat 32 to NTSF the performance is not as good.

Just thought I would share.. my only option now is to do a complete reformat, so I guess I have to buy yet another USB drive to temporarily store my data, as I do not have enought space on my primary hard drive.. this sucks. I wish I had formatted the hard drive the moment I got it.. now I have 50 GB on it in FAT32 mode..

Okay, well in the end I did it. It worked. :D

If I see it's too sluggish, I'll transfer everything and reformat, but it seems to work fine. Streaming from BFD and Gold.

So the USB drive is now NTSF and the sampletank categories show up in the right order in the interface :)

If you decide to try it, I hope it works for you. Maybe I got lucky as far as it not loosing performance.

pheeleep,

Congrats - I'm glad it worked for you. And I guess that almost definitely defines the problem in Sampletank's browser as being related to FAT32.

In fact, I might have to convert my FAT32 sounds partition to NTFS when I get home tonight. But I have a question for you:

What was the procedure you used to convert the FAT32 drive to NTFS? And what operating system were you using? Any specifics would be appreciated.

Thanks.

My ST2 sound folders have been on an external drive nearly 5 months now. I now have had no issues with loading times or with the way ST2 lists the sounds as did when they resided on my system drive. I now use a Seagate 180 GB drive- 8MB buffer - in an ADS USB enclosure. I did notice that when I then moved my entire VST folder from my FAT32 C drive, to my internal D drive NTFS partition my ST2 loading times improved. I did this to keep my system drive above 50% empty. I can only attribute the improvement in loading time for ST2 VST and for the sounds to the NTFS. I have since then converted the FAT32 C drive to NTFS - one advantage is that it now defragments with Diskeeper much more efficiently - When it was FAT32 Diskeeper 9 would not completely defragment, leaving a few deframented files here and there.

Someone my need to correct me on this, but I think most external drives come formatted FAT32 by default so they are compatable with more OS's. I think someone told me that if I want my external HD to be compatable with both Microsoft and Apple OS's then go with FAT32.

That could have changed by now.

Robert
All I need to be happy is one more VSTi.

Mine is NTFS.

Hi Guys,

Hey Kz1, I have windows XP and the command is "convert".

Go to Start> help and type "convert to NTFS" and it'll tell you what to do.

If it asks you for a volume name, type the name of your harddrive ( I typed Lacie because it's a Lacie hard drive ).

Indeed, FAT 32 is for both mac and pc, but as I have no intention of using a mac for my stuff, I converted to NTFS. Everything has still been working fine.

Btw I used Norton Partition Magic to do the conversion. I also have Symatec Ghost and together provide powerful set of utlities. (I would avoid Norton Antivirus though.)

I think I'll give it a try myself tonight, as I've also been experiencing exactly the same problem. I did log it with IK some time ago, but gave up waiting for a reply.

Cheers

Well, changing the partition from FAT32 to NTFS did the trick for me also.
