If you select a MIDI clip and look in the properties area in the lower part of the screen, the third column across contains three quantise functions:

The first selects the note alue to which the quantise will snap note. You are right that in Tracktion this is based on the number of beats, so 1/4 is a quarter of a beat (i.e. a 16th note). In some sequencers this is called a 16th because the quantise note value is based on a bar of common time (i.e. a bar with four quarter note beats in it). This is because some sequencers are particularly geared towards music always being in 4/4 time. By not making this assumption, Tracktion is perhaps more flexible here.

The second control should be set to 100% by default. This is the amount of the quantise. If you are experiencing "loose" quantise as you describe, check that this says 100%, which will quantise exactly. By sliding the control to the left you can quantise less precisely, which as you say can create a nice and more human feel if used tastefully.

The third control allows for some preset grooves to be applied to your quantise. Again, if you want to have a strict quantisation, you need to check that this box shows (none) in the window. The other selections are fairly self-explanatory, but do check what is selected here. Tracktion also includes the facility to create your own "groove templates".

Once you have saved an edit, the quantise you have applied should be saved along with everything else. I've not come across the problem FletcherMunson describes.

Hope this helps, djsubject
