KvR member xerocreep is working on a very good amp sim. maybe you wanna PM him about it, but it's still in beta status. Sounds really good though.

Yes, JCM 900 and Cortex are the best ones IMO;
JCM 900 isnt beaten by anything (includes Amplitube) save a POD or, of course, a real Amp.
Another thing would be Revolverb with some of the POD impulses at www.noisevault.com; experiment with them (you could add another Revolverb + some Mic impulses) and add the simulanalog; this probably gives you the best free emulation, but at high CPU and time cost...
Cheers, Richard

I don't think I would bother with the POD impulses. I haven't tried them, but aren't the just impulses of modeled cabs? So basically they'd be a model of a model.
Cortex is pretty good. I agree that the Simulanalog JCM is the best free Marshall sim out there, but the Plexi model in Warp VST is pretty good. I only mention this because Warp (as a discontinued product) is available for very cheap right now.

Yeah, but did they mention the Simulanalog stuff or Trash? Sheesh. I buy an issue of EM once a year to remind me of how much better it is to be here!jeffn1 wrote:MDA (the latter got a nice write up in Electronic Musician magazine.) [sic]

I noticed Ian from krakli posted here but forgot to mention his trAMP, Its not traditional but for a dirtifier it does its job really well.

I will possibly replace it soon with the distortion and filtering circuits from Karnage done as a standalone effects unit, as I've never been that happy with tramp.. I would always use JCM9000 if I wanted an amp sim.. but I also sometimes use the Slayer2 that I got with FLStudio..ThunderDrums wrote:I noticed Ian from krakli posted here but forgot to mention his trAMP, Its not traditional but for a dirtifier it does its job really well.

It appears that Simulanalog cannot run properly in Sonar through the Sonar adapter because of some issue relating to stereo routing of channels. Can anyone confirm this?
My impression is that Slayer 2's effects give me a great distorted sound, but I am not sure if I trust my ears. What do you think?

Yes, I had this problem too, then I started using the free spin audio vst wrapper just for the jcm 900, it's a little quirky but it works. Unfortunately I ran into some kind of denormal issues with the jcm in bigger projects (cpu spikes). I propably wouldn't have started coding TubeBaby if that didn't happenjeffn1 wrote:It appears that Simulanalog cannot run properly in Sonar through the Sonar adapter because of some issue relating to stereo routing of channels. Still there are workarounds and for high gain sounds the jcm 900 still kicks ass.
Cortex and Saro are also pretty good, I wasn't too font of the slayer fx though when I checked the demo.
cheers,

It is a rather harsh plugin but it has found its place in a few songs I have made. Its espeically useful for harsh 303 stabs like that of prodigy (voodoo people) or some harsh synth leads. I will always keep the plug in my folder but I would love to see a distortion plug based on the one found on Karnage. I wonder, as with most amp sims give or take a few, if you would pay close attention to the lofi effect some sims have on resonace. I have a 303 and have found that many amp distortions lofi the resonace when the cutoff is tweaked up making acid music a problem. Bloodoverdrive and cyanide 2 have been the best as they do not have this effect and allow the filter to scream with all its glory. Sadly those distortions have their own sound and are not the same as that of an amp sim.ianweb123 wrote:I will possibly replace it soon with the distortion and filtering circuits from Karnage done as a standalone effects unit, as I've never been that happy with tramp.. how do you handle this resonance problem?

The tb-303 is an overrated hardware silver box that originally cost $200 but is being sold now at a rediculous price range: $900 - $1500. Its a quirky little machine with few knobs and is the worst bass modelling synth ever. But it grabs a hold of you and you cannot let go, the fampous 18db-lp filter screams with resonance. Almost all producers have used it at some pount. Audio realism's Bassline, Muon Tau MK2, and plenty of freebies emulate the little silver thing with varying success.

Little Green Amp r0X0rz, but it's no longer freely available. It was too good to be free.Gargoyle wrote:When I do dust off my Charvel geetar for some fun thrashing around and noise-making I tend to turn to Little Green Amp, probably because I find it very immediate and satisfying - it's in the list

I have been playing around with the Slayer effects and the Vintaudio Godin Guitar and I am really liking the sound.
I am starting to think that the thing I like about Slayer is really the effects. I think using quality sampled electric guitar with Slayer effects might be the best of both worlds. The Slayer efects seem to give the Godin (spelling?) harmonics that are not detectible in the dry sample (maybe that is obvious to other people, but it wasn't to me).
The Cortext didn't seem to give me the heavy harmonic-laden sound I was looking for, but it may well be that I did not know what I was doing when I played with it.
