I need help with Punch mode

I searched these forums to no avail to see if anyone else has experienced this, or to find out if I'm doing something wrong.
When punching in a new clip over an old clip I set the I/O points, record mode is set to "replace old clips in edit with new ones", ensure punch mode is enabled, place the curser a suitable distance away (I don't use the count in feature but the problem still occurs if do), and push record.
On review of the take, the entire punched in part is there, but one beat before the punch starts, there is a gap created in the track (like I've used the "delete region" function)
original clip - gap - punch in - original clip
When going from the punched in part back to the original track there is no gap created, but is rather, the seamless transition into the original clip that the front side should be.
Help! What am I doing wrong or how do I fix this?
btw- I think I really like this program. It's got a few quirks but I also feel like the developers are really listening and responding to the users.

I can confirm it happens, but can't really offer a solution, other than to point out that it is all non-destructive, so you can slip-edit the end of the old take to but up against the new clip, or create an overlap then hit "auto cross-fade".

OK, so I just found the thread that indicates that this is a bug and not me screwing up a setting somewhere. I just figured that this was a "user error" and went in search of an answer from that standpoint, which didn't help. I just happened to find a link to a thread regarding the problem.
The work around, apparently, is to cut out the part of a take that you don't want, set I/O points, and record the punch in on another channel (track x).
Seems to me to be a little funky, but at least it's workable.
*platinumears- Are you saying the missing portion isn't really missing, that the part of the track in front of the punch-in is shortened, creating that gap? I'll experiment and see what happens.
Thanks for your response!

Exactly so: select the clip and drag the clear triangle that appears on the bar at the top, and you will reveal the original wave (which has not been affected at any point, hence "non-destructive").Big_D wrote: *platinumears- Are you saying the missing portion isn't really missing, that the part of the track in front of the punch-in is shortened, creating that gap?
IMO this makes the issue slightly annoying, rather than a serious show-stopper.
