I used to have some contact with the noizguild crew, but not for the last 5 years. If there is a club near you with a night that doesn't normally have entertainment (live band or dj's) then that's the best night to see if they'll let you hold events. I always had a great time doing my night, and would love to do it again some day.
"art" dj-ing ... ?

again, thanks everyone for the tips.
i'll be on the lookout for a club that has an off night with very drunk or otherwise altered patrons and spin me singularly eldritch free-electronica mixes for their besotted ears.
which leads me to the next question ... my taste runs rather strongly toward the outermost rim of the musical spectrum (richard devine is my favorite electroniste). so which djs should i listen to?
appreciating,
rachMiel

I'd mention the aforementioned Noizguild folks (though Endmusik implied they have no regular venue anymore) and W.Bennett, who I mentioned before, but they're all a helluva lot more on the outermost than Devine - more in the extreme noise end of the spectrum. Russell Haswell also comes to mind.rachmiel wrote:again, thanks everyone for the tips.

some dj's that i have seen live:rachmiel wrote:which leads me to the next question ... my taste runs rather strongly toward the outermost rim of the musical spectrum (richard devine is my favorite electroniste). so which djs should i listen to?
Amon Tobin, Dj Shadow, RjD2, Kid Koala, Bonobo, Mossy Rock aka Intergallactic Ferrie Funk(anyone know these cats?), missed LTJ Bukem TWO times, and i cant think of many more that perform rigourously.
the names i have mentioned are a tiny slice of what kind of djs are out there. there is also a guy named Robert Rich who you should look into because he does these all night "sleep" gigs where you go to the venue with a pillow and everyone sleeps to his synth sounds. i wish i could do that, really.

cool. there was an all-night radio show broadcast some years back that you were supposed to tune in, turn low, and sleep to. would be interesting to use brainwave research to compose a piece that would calm the brain, inspire it to fall asleep. (no doubt it's been done.)

Most electronica artists play dj sets as well as playing live maybe slsk?, there are quite a few radio shows (both net and 'real life') that approach thier programing more as a mix set, bbc radio one breezeblock mix sets are usualy very good - also on on slsk. (thought about trying to get a late night radio show instead of playing venues)
A very good mix cd was included on the warp visions dvd that warp records just releced - mixed by a bloke called zilla - also dj surgeon plays quite a bit of experimental stuff in his sets - there is a mix on his site http://www.dj-surgeon.com/ , but he is probly a bit too 4 to the floor for your liking.... most interesting djs i have seen have been supporting electronica artists in small clubs n stuff.

The day I call myself a 'turntablist' is the day I have to stop DJing, mainly because I must have my head that far up my own arse I wouldn't be able to get my headphones on!!
Me, I play clubs, bars (both dancing and listening) and occasionally in funky fashion retail outlets. Where I am determines what I play. I really like the chilled out listening bars though.

Beige cords! NO! Acid Jath! NO! Wank Shops? Occaisonally! Oh you said wanky.
No I mean those sort of club clothes/ticket outlets/record shops/general hangouts for people on a come down sort of shops. Actually used to manage something similar in early 90s. What a riot that was.
Thinking about it, if somebody wants to pay me to play shit music while looking like an extra from a DeeLite video then hell yes, I'll pimp myself out. I'll even wear twatty glasses (you know, the ones that make me look so much more intelligent than eveyone else!)

this is my first posting to a kvr forum, so forgive any heinous kvr-iquette faux pas's i am making.![]()
i am interested in trying my hand(s) at dj-ing. alas, my music (and the music i love) is very (very!) non-4/4. in fact, it's non-N/4, non-N/8, models its rhythmic flow after spoken dialogue (or interestingly broken machines) rather than a metronome/grid. clearly, my mixes would not be appropriate for conventional club (or other) dancing.
so my question is: do djs ever dj for *listening* rather than *dancing* audiences? or is this considered blasphemous, i.e., is dj-ing, by definition, an activity to enable/inspire dance?
thanks,
rachMiel
