I was gonna suggest you might have faulty hardware (ram/mobo/cpu), but since this only happens in Cubase, it is very unlikely.

Have you at least checked that you have all the latest chipset and graphics card drivers, or any other driver you can think of? I know it sounds obvious but it seems you are running out of options so everything is worth a shot.

Good luck meight.

thanks for your suggestions; I know I have the latest chipset drivers, but not sure about the graphics card.
You're right, I'm running out of things to check, so it's worth it, alright.

Still one thing to check, BlueDad:

VST(i) PLUGINS !!!

Can it be related to the use of a specific VST in the Cubase projects?

And does it also happen in an empty project in which only one Synth1 track is added? Maybe the project file is f**ked up.

I thought of that, and had narrowed it down initally to dr008, because that's in almost everything..so I changed to Battery. With great excitement (cause I knew I had nailed the problem), I listened and eventually the drop out happpened again.

No, I don't use synth1 very often.
However, what I HAVE discovered this morning:
I'm trying to work on a song and so far only have 4 bars, bass (kontakt) drums (dr008) and audio (guitar).
Last night, things went well, and there was no drop out, however this morning it all started again. Then I noticed, if I close the song (not Cubase) and reopen it - I have audio again!
bizarre!

Bizarre indeed... Welcome to the Twilight Zone :?

I only mentioned Synth1 'cause its supposed to be rather stable due to its simplicity. And playing an empty project would not ever trigger the problem.

well after everything, I finally uninstalled SX2 and went back to Cubase 5.2. I had a wonderful time last night, recording and abusing a number of tracks - dropping fx in and out while the song was playing. Never lost audio, or had any clicks.
I always did love 5.2
It will always be a mystery why SX2 behaved as it did, but I won't reinstall it until I built py next daw. We'll see what happens then.

Weird... Maybe you should ask about this at the Yahoo PCDAW Group, some of the members know an awful lot about DAWs, or at steinberg.net?

Maybe switching drivers in Cubase gets you your audio back too?

I had this "losing audio" problem a few times with SX 2, unfortunately I don't remember on which machine it was.
Since SX 3 I never had it again.

As your other programs are running fine, have you ever suspected the dongle being the problem, or at least part of it?
I mean, SX is challenging the dongle every now and then (in stop mode, fortunately). It's doing all sorts of funny things when you pull the dongle out during a session (not that you would do so usually, I did it for a test) - perhaps those problems are related.
I'd recommend checking another USB port for it.
In addition you may want to try the latest synchrosoft driver.
I've also seen faulty dongles allready - admittedly very few, but they were causing similar problems too.
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.
