In tracktion tell it not to rescan for vst plugins at startup that will reduce your startup time.

Six seconds for me on a Powerbook 1 ghz with 768 mb . . . 56 seconds if I accidentally click on the Garageband icon, wait for it to load, shut it down, THEN start Tracktion.

I also have fond/not-so-fond memories of my VIC 20. I remember how relieved I was to get the cassette interface . . . knowing my data was finally safe.

I wonder if that picture of the Sinclair was taken after its owner tried to type on its membrane keyboard!

My puter take @5 seconds to open T with full vst scan
Now, openning an edit with alot of vst's in it is a completely different issue.

weird. I just counted 10 seconds about, with no vst scan. Adobe Audition literally took 1 second.

i get so jack of T's starting time (even with plugin scan disabled) that for most sketches i'll reach for energyXT first 'cause i want to get them down as fast as possible - even though it's much easier and straight forward sequencing in T.

when i really must open T nowadays, i'll disable my virus scan first. then it seems to load in about a tenth of the time. same goes for scanning for new plugins.

by the way i use mcafee virus scan and it does seem to slow things down a lot more than norton did

20 WHOLE seconds it takes? That's enough to put you off using a particular recording environment?

It's times like this that it's frustrating to be in a conversation and asking for people to be reasonable.

Ron and everyone else-- the load time has been explained before in other threads. There's a reason for it. And without rescan, there's no way that it takes more than 10 seconds to load.

Honestly. That's no time at all. If you're impatient about THAT, I'd hate to be a friend of yours in the real world, because you'd be constantly whining about waiting for things. "What? The movie is still 5 minutes away from beginning?" "What? I had to wait here until 12:16! I told you to meet me at 12:15, you bastard!" "What? My spaghetti isn't cooked? The directions say approximately 7 minutes and we're already up to 7 minutes and 30 seconds, I'm never buying Catelli noodles again!"

I wish you could see how ridiculous it is to be impatient about a 10 or 20 second wait.

[edit: just tested it and it takes more or less 3 seconds to load. What the hell are you 20 second people talking about???]

There's a solution to this problem.

What you need to do is tell your virus checker NOT to check the VSTi DLLs. Different virus software will do this in different ways.

It will have a significant impact on the VSTi load times, the Tracktion startup time, and it beats switching off your virus scanner altogether!

One more point of clarification: What you do is tell your virus checker not to scan the directory that contains your VST plugins.

I got to "five one-thou..." really not that painful of a wait.

Of course, I don't even get to "one" with energyXT, and I never have to rescan for plugins there. Not really complaining, just pointing out that there's room for improvement in the VST scanning (moreso than the load time)

You do - it just works differently. At the moment it's less configurable than Tracktion in this respect. Check this thread I've started.

Like I said, just disable automatic plugin scan and it takes next to no time (even on my old Athlon 500 it takes about 6 or 7 seconds).
