To be sure, picking only one song to play for the rest of your life would be a tough choice. I might opt for Kashmir, by Led Zepplin. Then again, White Christmas offers some nice imagery for someone stranded on a tropical island. (You didn't say whether this island is tropical or not. That might make a big difference.)

NOT one of my favorite songs or anything, but I always thought that if I were going to do production or A&R for an indie rock band this would be my standard for a pop song:

REM -- "(This one goes out to) The One I Love"

1) They say radio songs should reach the refrain in a minimum of 30 seconds. This one start in the refrain!!!

2) Radio songs should have "sing along" lyrics that can easily be remembered. This one has like 4 lines total.

3) It should have a memorable chorus. What could possibly be more memorable for a chorus than "FIRE"???

4) For indie/college rock street cred the track should have lyrics with a dark undertone. Once again this track is aces -- despite the obvious "one I left behind" lyrics most listeners still think it is a love song.

Michael Stipe must laugh his ass off everytime he gets a royalty check.

Anyhow, it got me thinking about what is my choice of the perfect pop single and (after not much thought) I settled for 'The Primitives > Crash' A wonderful single that I as much today as when it was first released. I know this topic is subjective, I like other singles more than Crash, but as far as throw away pop music goes, it can't be bettered for me.

What makes the perfect pop single for you?

Prince----->When Doves Cry

This perfect pop single was also the first time that any black music can goes #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts without any bass parts at all!!!

Also, the lyrics were very easy to remember.

"Kiss", by Prince, also had some funky guitar work. I think it's a good example of a well-crafted pop song.
