So a vinyl record of Bing Crosby singing "White Christmas" is probably out of the question then? :D

To be sure, picking only one song to play for the rest of your life would be a tough choice. I might opt for Kashmir, by Led Zepplin. Then again, White Christmas offers some nice imagery for someone stranded on a tropical island. (You didn't say whether this island is tropical or not. That might make a big difference.) :hihi:

Shamann, is Somewhere Over the Rainbow - Israel Kamakawiwo`ole the (sorry for the inept description  ) Hawaiian sounding version? -I love that version! it is amazing!

For pop, how about a little

There Goes God- Crowded House
Tears of a Clown- Smokey
Werewolves of London - Warren Zevon
JAck& Diane- John Mellencamp

And Gratuitously,
Deadman's Party- Oingo Boingo

These pop songs referring to the whole guitar-pop bit (the synth pop is for another thread :) )

NOT one of my favorite songs or anything, but I always thought that if I were going to do production or A&R for an indie rock band this would be my standard for a pop song:

REM -- "(This one goes out to) The One I Love"

1) They say radio songs should reach the refrain in a minimum of 30 seconds. This one start in the refrain!!!

2) Radio songs should have "sing along" lyrics that can easily be remembered. This one has like 4 lines total.

3) It should have a memorable chorus. What could possibly be more memorable for a chorus than "FIRE"???

4) For indie/college rock street cred the track should have lyrics with a dark undertone. Once again this track is aces -- despite the obvious "one I left behind" lyrics most listeners still think it is a love song.   Michael Stipe must laugh his ass off everytime he gets a royalty check.
And all life's fears
Can invade my ears
I can handle it

I recently heard "Going To a Dead Man's Party" on my car radio, while I watched a funeral procession drive past me, on its way to a nearby graveyard. That was a spooky coincidence. :o

Talk about a "long-distance dedication". :D

(That's a Kasey Kasem top-40 joke, for those non-USA readers among us.)

1/ 3 minutes (or under) long
2/ It's got be by a guitar based band
3/ Instantly memorable melody
4/ Pointless lyrics, nothing deep anyway
5/ Put's a smile on my face each time I hear it

Anyhow, it got me thinking about what is my choice of the perfect pop single and (after not much thought) I settled for 'The Primitives > Crash' A wonderful single that I  as much today as when it was first released. I know this topic is subjective, I like other singles more than Crash, but as far as throw away pop music goes, it can't be bettered for me.

What makes the perfect pop single for you?
Prince----->When Doves Cry

This perfect pop single was also the first time that any black music can goes #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts without any bass parts at all!!!

Also, the lyrics were very easy to remember. 8)

That's not a bad song, but a bit too dreary and emotionally unfocused for my taste. I wouldn't place it at the top of any 'favorites' list.

I prefer Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus".

Depeche Mode---->Policy Of Truth 8)

A simple pop song that sound very serious with minor keys!

"Kiss", by Prince, also had some funky guitar work. I think it's a good example of a well-crafted pop song.

Someone could, but not me. I take pop to mean 'in the popular style,' rather than 'most popular with the people.'
Pop is a style in itself, just as rock, polka, techno and blues is. Therefore, Metallica is not pop, neither is U2, Eminem, Norah Jones, Beyoncee or Chemical Brothers, even though they have been no.1.
it's all pop

though it might not necessarily be 'poppy'

Yep, I agree... If it's music, and it's popular, it's pop. Full stop.

Even the Rotterdam Termination Source's 'Poing' was pop :o
