Just got DSL capability,

I've noticed that with edits I that previously I had no issues with CPU overload, and even new edits, my meter has a good 25% used up that before wasn't used.

Result is way more crackles and the like.

My system is Win98SE (yes I know it's ancient), and I'm using ZoneLabs software firewall.

I don't want to shut down the DSL modem since it will reset some of it's 'learned' settings if I do so, so I need to have some kind of firewall in place, but I'm thinking it might be the Zonelabs that is chowing the CPU.

Is it time for a hardware firewall?

Anybody else with a similar experience?

I recommend you disable network connection (from the small icon in the system tray) and then shutdown Zonealarm when Tracktioning - that's what I did back then to save resources... I believe your DSL modem is external? Then it should cause no CPU load even when turned on, if you disable network connection.

Later I installed a dedicated W2K OS for audio and bought a H/W firewall-router for the other two OSes and to provide net for the lappy :)

another option is to use a router....go wireless then the router acts as your firewall.......good luck!

Dunno if your situation is typical, as I'm not familiar with performance issues while using ZoneAlarm. I will say that Windows XP's built-in firewall is very nice, and I would consider upgrading the OS for both the stability and security.

As has been mentioned, an external firewall is also an option. Most routers have one built in. A D-link or Linksys Cable/DSL router will do the trick just fine, and won't break your bank.

On Win98SE, there is no little network connection icon.

I think what i need to do is actually disconnect my CAT5 cable from the DSL modem, and shutdown all processes, zone alarm, AVG antivirus, and all of the IP client stuff in the background that are active. I wish I could batch file this, or create an alternative login with Win98SE that basically leaves these off. I haven't tried that yet but it seems like it should be possible.
