SampleTank 2 reauthorisation required for a new hard disk?

I know this isn't strictly a Sonic Reality/esoundz problem, but I needed to vent my frustration, and there wasn't an appropriate place to do it on the IK Multimedia site!

I've just upgraded my hard disk, partly in order to accommodate the multiple SampleTank libraries I've acquired of late. I bought a new 160GB Seagate Barracuda to replace the old 60GB Barracuda I had, and used Ghost 2003 to clone the old disk to the new one. Astonishingly (to me anyway!) it worked like a charm, and the PC booted up without any complaints from Windows XP (which is what I was most concerned about).

Then I started Cubase SX and...it appears SampleTank 2 thinks I have a new digital ID, and I have to use another of my 3 authorization codes to get it working again; all for being a loyal buyer of SampleTank libraries. It doesn't seem fair, particularly as Windows XP had no problem with the swap.

Grrrr...

:x

Just installed a new harddrive myself today but none of my challenge response stuff (Reaktor and Tassman mainly) has made a fuss over it - that seems strange.

Ditto - none of my NI stuff has been a problem. Unlike a lot of people, I've got no problem with challenge/response systems (I regard them a necessary evil) but it seems a bit harsh to have to use another authorization for a hard disk upgrade, particularly for the same make & model of disk.

I'm just speculating here, but I would guess that if you ended up burning through all 3 authorization codes in a legitimate manner, IK would be flexible in granting more upon request, particularly if you could provide evidence as to why you had to burn up the 3 allotted codes.

So I would hang on to any invoices and other documentation that you might later want to offer as evidence as to why you had to use more than one authorization code.

I just don't see any software company not working with a customer where it can be shown why more authorization codes are needed. I would think the arbitrary limit of 3 was just a measure to prevent abuses, and if more are needed, they could be obtained if you contact IK.

Could you explain that 3 authorizations thing to me.
I've had to re-format my old hard drive more than 3 times in the past and if this is what I think it is, I'm much more worried about spending a lot of coin for their products.

Do you have to re-purchase everything if you download it more than three times?

Hey guys, there's no need to worry. You get three authorisations initially, but that's not a hard limit! Three is usually plenty for most people, but if you use them up, just contact IK (via support or email) stating that you need more (and why), and they'll gladly give more authorisations to you.

As long as you're their customer, you'll have as many authorisations as you need. Forever. So don't worry about it.

Forever,

Kim.

In addition to what Jeez said, also check to see if your digital I.D. really did change. I had Ableton Live blow up on me and as a result Sampletank came up like it needed to be authorized. A quick check at the IK website showed that the digital ID was the same as it was so I used the same authorization code and all was well again without an additonal code usage.

Thanks Kim - I wasn't sure how much of a hassle it would be to get further authorizations out of IK, but it sounds as if it shouldn't be a problem. Hopefully the new digital ID generated will back up my story if ever need to do this.

Dan, I've been through a similar process with Ableton Live as well, but this is definitely a new digital ID compared to the one I originally registered on the IK site.

Thanks to everyone for their responses - I was just surprised how sensitive SampleTank 2 was to hardware changes (compared to other products). Remind me not to sneeze too near my PC in case it needs a new code again :D

Oh, and Dimwit - don't let this put you off, it's a great product...

I had a slight problem getting my Sampletank registered, but I was able to get it going. I had sent a message to IK, and they called me personally to make sure that everything was ok. I really appreciated that personal touch. I am very confident that they would never leave a person hanging if they had a problem. It's always a good idea to keep your receipts, but I would think they would work something out with you, even if you didn't have it.
