OK kids we are going to watch some demo Videos of my new toy.

I haven't had this much fun with a new toy since grade school
.... or was it my first girlfriend.... :hihi:

The sound quality on the Videos is poor so I put up Hi-Quality MP3 version as well.
(badly needed for the Strings Video)

..wibble..

So... er... maybe I'm out of the loop, but what IS the new toy? Obviously I know what you're doing, but what hardware specifically did you get?

I want one. 8)

Yeah, I want one of those too! I just sold my Roland GR-70 and think that Yamaha is much more suited to what I want a midi guitar to do.

Thanks for sharing.

Is this that Yamaha EZ thingy. How responsive is it? Is it up to fast leads for example? (I'm talking John McGaughlin type stuff)

Post

If it can handle bass notes correctly I'd get it was using AXON neural net technology.

Awesome... does it track well when you shred?

Post

it doesn't track, since it is not a guitar. It's a yamaha EZ-AG. They also make an EZ-EG that looks like an electric. It works like a z-tar (www.starrlabs.com) though not quite as feature-rich. A couple of KvR members have been developing software to modify it's behaviour in various ways.

very cool toy.

Yes, I know that. Can you shred on it accurately? Here's another video I found of it:

I'm going to have to find some stuff to sell to get one of these. The wife just wouldn't go for it otherwise.

I've never touched one, so I wouldn't know. I misread your original post, as most people have that concern after using tracking systems like the roland gear, where as this type of system doesn't actually do any pitch detection. It merely transmits which button on the neck is pressed.

Post

I'd be interested to see how sensitive it is... wonder if they have them at Guitar Center?

Post

Another question is, does it transmit all six "strings" one a single midi channel, or 6 midi channels?

Post

Just checked the manual online:

http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/Documen ... EZAG_E.pdf

The midi implementation chart at the end says it uses 6 midi channels. Sigh. I can see why this needs to be done using a guitar synth, but with what is essentially a keyboard done with buttons? Come on, 6 channels is such a pain in the ass. Send it all on 1 channel.

Post

It's infinitely easier to merge channels into one than to split. It makes more sense from a flexibility point of view to do it this way, and more sense in general. Why?

A keyboard is one chromatic beast, covering X octaves, but all chromatically.

The guitar is chromatic, too, but with 6 (or more or less depending on the instrument) independent chromatic 'controllers' (for lack of a better word).

Why not give the guitarist the capability to take advantage of this fact?
