I'll agree with that...
The guitar is chromatic, too, but with 6 (or more or less depending on the instrument) independent chromatic 'controllers' (for lack of a better word).
Why not give the guitarist the capability to take advantage of this fact?
Well, I guess from a flexibility standpoint, this is like allowing a controller keyboard to be split up into 6 zones. I guess I don't really care if it can do this as long as I can merge them all, inside the guitar, to one channel so I don't have to merge it in software or open 6 instances of Synth1 in Tracktion.

Yeah but it's great to be able to put a bass patch on the low e string, a lead sound on the e, g and b and something else in between. And why is it such a pain to do it in software? Most apps defaults to accept midi on all channels so if thats what you want you don't have to do anything at all..

Okay, you've convinced me. :D

Now where can the best deal on these be found? And what are the differences between the AG and EG? The EG looks way cooler...

So can you play fast leads on it? No slides though I guess.

I bought mine from Tokyo, but I think it's available on Amazon.com too. The main difference between the AG and the EG is the trem bar, which functions like a pitch wheel. For detail comparison please check Markleford's page here:

This guitar is designed and marketed as a training guitar, with LEDs on the fret board as play guides. It's not ideal as a controller, but with the scripts by Markleford and Marc, it's very playable.

You can play fast leads on it, but the problem is the fret buttons are not velocity sensitive. Thus when you move along the fretboard it can't distinguish between normal freting and hammer-on/pull-off. If you play fast leads like on a normal guitar, it will easily generate lots of double notes when you're freting. This can be solved by adjusting your play style, or simply disable hammer-on and pull-off, or play melodies with just the fretboard like what Markleford did in the video.

Another minor problem of the EZ Guitars (at least on mine) is that when picking the strings hardly, an adjacent string will sometimes be triggered. This is more annoying on open strings so I usually have open strings disabled and it works just fine.

Should be possible to get a kinda slideish effect using a synth patch with a bit of portamento.. problem is that this way there'll be slide on every tone played..
