Childish and pathetic.

The behaviour in this thread is getting childish again allready, but (and I'm serious about it):
Anybody into online music stuff NOT getting the codecs for OGG de/encoding is just utterly stupid!
Apart from the fact that compression seems to be better than with most MP3 codecs, it's BY FAR the best format for collaborations and such (as it doesn't add that lame bit of silence in the beginning, which is what MP3 is doing).
Loading the track now - I can play and convert to and from OGG just fine, took me 1 minute to get all the required codecs, back when I found out what a great format it is.

The compression might be better, but that doesnt mean not relying on it is stupid, or that that makes up for the inconvenience, Sascha.

I dont use winamp I use WMP10
and I also see no point in OGG other than to make things more complicated.
saying that I wish there was 3 plugs/connectors
small medium and large, not 20 zillion permutations.

I wasn't talking about "relying" on OGG.
It's just the best compressed (loss-ly) format there is.
Anybody not being able to use it should better stay away from online collaborations too (and that's what most KVR people are into as well). It's INCREDIBLY superior to MP3 for the above mentioned reason: It won't f**k up your timing! And that's the most important thing EVER!
If we were on some MP3-H4cK3R5 forum, I'd eventually agree with you. OGG might be a too much infamous format.
But this is a musician's forum - and any musician not being aware of the clear advances OGG is offering (especially when collaborating) is just stupid. Sorry, but that's it.
topaz: What's so complicated with OGG? The fact that you'll have to spend 30 seconds to get the codec running? Oh yes, that's complicated indeed...
As if it'd take less time to d/l WMP10.

You forgot the link Krim,
I use ogg/flac/wave and for net mp3
DB is a strange beast though - but fast and it plays n converts just about anything - and there is a free version. (I got the power box version way back - right click heaven)

Sascha Franck quoth I wasn't talking about "relying" on OGG.
No but the original poster was relying on it.

That depends on what you want it to be 'best' at, and who yuo talk to. Not everyone agrees with that, and Ive seen people state MP3 Pro was better. Its a subjective thing; any psychoacoustic compression methodology has to be.

Funny, Ive been able to collaborate pretty well using WAV files. And my preference would always be for lossless encoding over any lossy codec, ogg, mp3 or otherwise.

I have no idea what you mean by that.

Well, IMO if you're thinking about serious collaboration, but insisting on lossy compression, then you really need to rethink the term 'stupid'.

last time I tried it all I got was crackles on this system, if I want lossless compression I have used FLAC, saying that all the online sessions I did I just rar up the wavs, sorted.
oh, and with a 4 meg connection coming.

Spe3d: The free version of dbpoweramp supports rightclick integration just nicely.
Regarding whyterabbyt's and topaz' comments about quality or lossless formats: Yes, you're right. But we weren't talking about that yet.
Whenever I start a collaboration, I won't be sending large wave (or flac'ed or rared or whatever) files to each other. I will only use those if things turn out to be worthwhile - and sometimes even in that case MP3/OGG quality is fine, especially when it comes to electric guitars which usually don't feature too much high frequencies anyways (I once even did a phase inversion test with some overdriven guitars, they almost cancelled out each other).
Regarding quality differences between lossy compression formats: Maybe MP3Pro is even better again - but it still sucks as much for collaboration as plain MP3s do. Just because your timing will be f**ked up.
The only other format (apart from OGG) I know of which won't do so is WMA. But better don't ask your Mac friend to collaborate via WMA files.
Bottomline:
- For a lossy format OGG isn't sounding too bad.
- It won't f**k with your timing.
- It's x-platform.
Isn't that enough for *us* online musicians to make use of it?
