I tried them all and I liked the workflow in Sony Vegas the best! I ended up purchasing it and have been very happy with it as a multitracker.

With Directixer you can use most any VST in Vegas and the next version of Vegas will likely support VST natively.

If you don't require MIDI, Vegas is worth a serious look!

Nuendo or Cubase SX are the most similar to PT as far as the workflow goes. Their midi is superior and there are way more plug ins and virtual instruments available. You may miss Beat Detective though. That's the only thing missing from the Steinberg offerings.

I think that Adobe Audition is definitely your best bet, but don't take my word for it...

...the demo version is FULLY functional, including save enabled (for 30 days).

Further info and downloadable "tryout version" available from here:

http://www.adobe.com/products/audition/main.html

The 30 day "tryout" period is more than enough to give you an idea of whether you are sold on it or not, and any problems you might encounter (I have encountered none worth mentioning!)

Tracktion is also a top recommendation, but is a full-on sequencer with MIDI, VST, etc, which you say you don't need.

1. What exactly is the difference between PTLE Mac and PC ? :?

2. Depends on what he used PT for, audition cannot cover all the bases. E.g. no busses in audition. It's still not a fully blown DAW, but a multitracker.

3. Tracktion is excellent but if your more fond of the normal way of handling things go for Samp. You won't be let down.

thanks for your suggestions!
audition no busses -> thats a big minus!
sony vegas? never heard of it...
tracktion: does it have a mixer? i couldn`t find one..

o.k. i think i have to tell you what i like in PT and what i`m looking for in another host.
- editing in PT is great
- grouping funktions
- automation for aux sends and returns and of course
volume
- i like to have vst and directx support
- midi does not matter
- i don`t need vsti support
- i just record "real" instruments and edit mix and
master it?
and it should support at least 16 tracks of simultanious inputs

Hi jotb, welcome to KVR :)

Tracktion does have a mixer, but not in the traditional sense regarding the visual display of it.

Basically it has a left-to-right setup and you effectively drag plugins into the relevant place in the left-to-right chain.

Also volume and panning work in the same way. So effectively the mixing is all there and no less featured than any other host, but just not with a fancy (and if you ask me pretty unecessary) fancy mixer that looks like hardware.

Hope this helps.

having told someone in one thread they should get cubase not samplitude im telling you that if you are basically recording and editing get samplitude - the editing is great - the include fx are great

just the midi etc is pretty woeful (or was last time i looked - very reason looking) but if that doesnt bother you go for it

Jonny X wrote:Id go for cubase with a external editing programme. This gives you great recording and mixing control. All the VST and direct x support you want as well as full automation of every mixer feature you could ever want. The only problem with it is the editor is a bit shoddy, and you probably want to use an external program
Why bother with all of this. One program will suit you fine. Samplitude. :D

What about Sonar ? It's a top program as well.
However, with Samplitude you go from recording to a finished CD/DVD master.

i don't know Samplitude but i know (from the DUC forum) that a lot of people who were working in PT have give a try with Samplitude and liked it. (as a second sequenceur or as a replacement)

No, you're wrong - there ARE busses. 8)

Once again...somebody getting all fussed about emulated hardware mixers in software...
Tracktion has a very capable and, if you ask me, very logical and intuitive left to right chain design, plus racks, which gives great flexibility. It will do sends as well, as I recently found out...

Editing in samplitude is greater :D. I mean the Vienna symphonic orchestra Library samples were all edited in it (Sequoia but anw). I trust that VSL know more than me to choose it for such a huge task
jotb wrote: - automation for aux sends and returns and of course

I'd asked about that. It seems auxes cannot be track automated but the can be object automated. Incidentally a developer of Samp said they're working on a new implementation. Check out my thread at http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... &start=120 concerning these. Jump to "g_montel"'s post.
jotb wrote:- i like to have vst and directx support
You've got it. Flexible too, and with unlimited effects, routing and post pre configurations.

I now have no doubt samplitude is what you need. For this kind of tasks it is PERFECT.

@popsych: i tested sam today in the studio of a friend, VERY nice. but he said it`s a little buggy, did you also have a lot of little bugs?

One more suggestion:

have you tried SONAR?

considering your requirements, i think it'll fit the bill nicely.
